Neighborhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

We went there on the 1st of November and there is a fence around it and it says it is under construction. Apparently they're going to change it from " I Amsterdam" to "I AM Dream"
So our visit was really disappointing, but it's a really nice place to be. Architecture and sights are amazing. Good food and a big park nearby.

There are two of the "iamsterdam" sign in the city, one at the Museumplein (near Rijksmusum, Van Gogh Museum), the other outside Schiphol Airport. Many young people like to climb to the top of the letters to take photos. Be there early (the one at Museumplein) if you want to have the sign all by yourself.

Its located right outside the train station which is connected to schiphol airport. Looks cool and is ofcourse iconic in amsterdam as its famous for selfies in Amsterdam. Nice eating places nearby in the station and hot waffles being prepared nearby.

Just came back from a 3 night stay to Amsterdam and purchased 36 hour I AM AMSTERDAM cards for myself and hubbie, we picked our cards up from the airport and they are a must, they saved us so much in time and exspense has we received a map which told us what was free what tram to get on and where in the city it was, you also get discounts when showing the card.
We visited in 48 hours 7 museums a canal boat trip and used the tram to get around the city. The card is easy they just scan it and to get on and off the tram you scan it by the door. The card pays for itself even though i did get a voucher code from get my guide for 10% off.
I recommend the canal boat trip which we boarded by the central station and it takes a hour through the many canals of Amsterdam, also you go past many sites such has ANN FRANKS house.
This is the first time i have used one of these cards and will be purchasing them in the future.

Please note, the iconic I AMsterdam sign in front of the Rijskmuseum has been removed by the municipality! The green-left city council felt it was too much an expression of individuality - you can argue about that, but it is probably true that Amsterdam has been runover by tourists. There are still I AMsterdam signs at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, and at the ADAM tower on the North Shore of the river IJ.

I tried getting a selfie photo but here is the big problem: a lot of people in the background. Solution is get a picture from behind then reverse the photo using camera 360 and other similar apps. Smart right? ;)

Researched Amsterdam prior to our visit and came across the I Amsterdam City Card. Well worth the purchase. I purchased 2 x 72 hour passes which cost €75 (approx £57). We used it on all tram rides and into a variety of museums including The Van Gough Museum, Rembrandts House, Diamond Museum, Tulip Museum to name a few. It also included a canal cruise. On working the prices out we found we saved around €20+ each.
Amsterdam was a fascinating city with plenty to do. Visits Anne Frank's House which was such a emotional journey. I'd advise anybody to purchase a ticket from the I Amsterdam information centre at the airport as this saves time. The queue is endless otherwise. We went straight in at our allotted time.
Getting from the airport was a doddle by buying a train ticket into Amsterdam Central Station then using the tram.
Well worth the visit.

The sign is already removed from the museum quarter. A smaller version is now only at the airport. This was done because the sign was attracting too much crowd. Don't waste your time people

There are actually three I Amsterdam installations: one at Schiphol Airport, one in front of the Rijksmuseum and one that "playfully" moves around the city! Younger tourists climb all over them, and it's a wonder to me that I didn't see anybody get hurt!

This place is a mad house. Countless children climbing all over the sign making it next to impossible to get a good picture. If you happen to be going to a museum in the area then yes, stop on by, but don't go out of your way to see the I Amsterdam sign.

Don't have my guide book to hand but the trams are super easy & quick to use. You can even buy a for 24h, 48h, 72h and get to use it as many times as you want

Hi,
Is the Iamsterdam city card worth to buy? I will be visiting Amsterdam on 15th February and will be leaving on 18th February. The canal cruise was something that I was excited about but the canals must be frozen at that time of the year, so is it really worth buying the city card?

It depends on how many museums you want to visit. See my itinerary, we maximised our museum visits and got terrific value for money. Anne Frank house NOT included, for this you need to check website and book 2 weeks in advance. Canal cruises operated in November 2016 as Europe was exceptionally warm this winter! I guess the canals are kept clear for the cruises and it is a beautiful way to see a truly stunning city. I advise plan your museum visits, transport included in the card and it is very easy to move around Amsterdam, every mode of transport seems to begin or end at Central station. Also you don't have to join the purchase a ticket queue in most museums nor buy transport ticket. The free gift in the shopping centre was a mug with some beauty samples. Enjoy and see other places I reviewed in Amsterdam.
