The area
Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Due to restoration work the tower can not be climbed for the next couple of years.
Still to walk around the area is well worth it, especially if you take some distance from the tower. For instance go to the other side of the canal (Prinsengracht) and walk through the Jordaan neighborhood. From Eerste Leliedwarsstraat you get superb views of the tower.
Completed in 1638 the 87m high Renaissance style tower is the highest church tower in Amsterdam. Note the exuberant decorations, quite unique for a Protestant churchtower.

A landmark structure along Prinsengracht is Westertoren, the 85 metre all tower that forms part of Westerkerk (West Church).
This is a beautiful tower that can be seen from quite some distance. You can also visit and tour the tower where you are afforded nice views of the area. Recommended to reserve in advance during peak summer months.
Designed by important Dutch architect Hendrick de Keyser in the early 17th-century, Westertoren is Dutch Renaissance in style. Similar to other church towers around Amsterdam, it is topped with the Imperial Crown of Austria. Views of the tower are really good from along Prinsengracht as well as certain areas within the Jordaan District.
Important sightseeing in the area includes Westerkerk, canal boat rides and Anne Frank House. Try to also find the small Anne Fank statue on the side of Westerkerk.

We were unable to view the inside but this tower is very beautiful and right off the river. It's close to the Anne Frank memorial and worth a stop!

I can only speak about the climb up Westertorn since the church itself was closed, unfortunately. They happened to be filming a television show there that weekend so no visitors were allowed. Luckily, we were still able to climb the tower.
The climb lasts about half an hour to go up and come back down. They start on every half hour, with the last tour leaving at 7:30 pm. There's a tour guide with you the whole time, who will teach you about the history of the tower itself. A tour costs 7 euros. You cannot purchase tickets online, but you can go early, buy your ticket, walk around the neighborhood, and then come back for your allotted time. This is what I would recommend. My boyfriend and I showed up at around 11, and the next available tour was for 1:30. This is most likely due to the fact that they do not let a lot of people up at a time (20 people per group).
The view from the top is amazing. You get a sweeping view of Amsterdam and you'll get about 10 minutes to take all the pictures you want. It was a great experience and gives you a different perspective of the city.

It is hard to miss the tower which is part of the Westerkerk and easily viewed from the canal if you are doing a boat tour or if you heading towards the Anne Frank house.

Nice tower next to Anne Frank house. Unfortunately for us, we didn't plan far enough ahead and were not able to get tickets for the climb, which was a bit of a waste, as the views at the top would have been magnificent.
The tower itself was still quite nice, especially the beautiful globe at the top. We will return again to Amsterdam, and will definitely book our tickets in advance next time.

Very Beautiful Tower nearby Anne Frank. Another beautiful architecture in Amsterdam that must visit by everyone. Unable to climb to top due to some TV shots happening there but still beautiful from below.

Probably worth buying your ticket to the top of this before you go and see Anne Frank's house, as you can book your timeslot ahead. It's a great climb although the stairs are steep on the way up, they appear about 20 times steeper on the way down. The view is great and the guide will be sure to be disgustingly attractive and able to provide lots of detail on the tower and the bells in multiple languages.

Does it cost money to climb the tower? And is there a long queue to do so?
Thank you!
