Neighborhood: Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is as historically significant as it is perennially popular. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, shutterbug, or fashionista, odds are you’ll find the Amsterdam you're looking for while roaming around the Grachtengordel (Canal Ring). A brilliant place to get lost in a moody meander and a key component to any sightseeing trip to Amsterdam, this area's major draws include the Anne Frank House, the Bloemenmarkt floating flower market, an enviable assortment of independent boutiques along De Negen Straatjes, and of course all of Grachtengordel’s lovely canals and bridges.

This ornate gate (circa 1603) was once the entrance to Rasphuis, a mens work camp for tramps and criminals where they made pigment for the paint industry. The work houses were used as an alternative to prison, no longer subjecting criminals to corporal punishment, reforming them through work. People pass this gate everyday without realising its history and you have to look up tp appreciate it

This gate is dated from the 17 th century. It was a prison gate, special for young male criminals. The detainees were made to shave wood from the tree, rasping it into powder for making paint. And in the 19 th century the building was demolished and changed into a swimming pool. Nowadays is an entrance of "Kalvertoren" shopping centre. The location is on the "Heiligeweg". Don't spend your time looking for this gate, it's not worth it.

Located on Kalverstraat, (shopping street), is this monument, representing, a women Castigatio, (holding a whip and shield, with the cities emblem), overlording two chained nude men. It looks a little out of place being the gate to a shopping cntre.

We went out for a walk our first night in Amsterdam. It was lit up and looked very pretty but it would have been easy to miss as most of the shops were closed.

Castigato is the symbol of discipline which in this case is the woman in the middle of the two chained men. dating from 1603 and recently renovated its is a striking addition to this entrance to a shopping arcade.

With all the gaudy refurbishments taking place in Amsterdam these days, this gate is easy to miss. In my humble opinion the restauration was done a bit sloppily, however the figurines atop the gate look rather fresh and sparkling. Nice visit.

Atop one of the entrances to the Kalverstoren shopping centre, these three figures are quite spectacular and even though the centre itself has been gutted and refurbished, they were left untouched happily.
Other reviewers have told of the Rasphuis so I won't repeat that aspect.
