Mezrab Cultural Center is a place founded (in 2004) by Sahand Sahebdivani. He was born in Iran but fled to the Netherlands with his parents. He was trained as a storyteller in the Dutch Royal Institute of the Tropics. Since years, he organizes storytelling nights (Credo: "free entrance, donations pay the rent"). There are also regular concerts (Arabic, Indian, Jazz and many other styles from all over the world, often original combinations, often with entrance fee). My favorite nights are the storytelling nights, where Sahand tells one story (often an ancient Persian story), followed by everyone who wants to share a story. The atmosphere is cosy, and his mom makes every week her famous Iranian soup ("Ash") and his father is serving delicious mint tea. The soup is so good and "heavy" that you do not need a meal before arrival.. At the time of writing this review, Sahand successfully raised 25,000 euro (I think mostly donations by fans) to move to a bigger stage in the same building of the Wilhelmina Pakhuis. If you are on holiday in Amsterdam, and free on a Friday evening make sure you visit this amazing storytelling night. There are English storytelling nights (sometimes also in Dutch, see website). In conclusion, Mezrab is the place where people come together, where you can meet all ages and every cultural and ethnic background. I strongly recommend it (check out their website for the upcoming events).

Cafe Mezrab is a very unique venue. A storytelling venue, it also hosts karaoke, live music, comedy and probably more. There is a bar where they serve everything from fresh mint tea to whiskey. They also serve some food (homemade soups, snacks etc).

I found the crowd to be incredibly friendly and affable, and very diverse. It's easy to go here on your own or with friends. The entertainment means that everyone ends up talking to everyone.

They run several events a week so there is something for everyone. If you live in Amsterdam, lucky you. If you are visiting and you are looking for something a little less mainstream and very entertaining, check it out!

Excellent place. Even better if you're on business trip, and find yourself a bit lonely. Mezrab and its owner, Sahand if i recollect his name, who is a performing artist himself and also the owner, waiter, and his family are the cooks, welcomes you with great hug of a friend. Perfect place to relax and enjoy yourself, while feeling like at home. And if you're lucky, you can drop on a story telling performance, and its usually the very best of it's kind in Amsterdam. Even if not too demanding, still an appealing art form, and after all what we are if not our inner story?

It doesn't matter where you come from in the world Mezrab has a way of making you feel like you are home. From mama Mezrab making the soup, papa Mezrab in the kitchen and Sahand their son opening your world through the most beautiful stories - this is the place to discover new worlds.

With regular world music, story telling and comedy nights there is something for everyone. I regularly attend either alone or with others... I almost prefer going alone as these are the time I get talking and sharing anecdotes with so many interesting people.

Mezrab is a place for the positive - one of the very few places in Amsterdam without judgment! There are so many great events like story telling and stand up comedy, and the crowd is brilliant. Have never seen such a laidback atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

The first time I came here was during a English Storytelling event since then Im here every event. On Friday's they have storytelling, hilarious improvisations, comedy and true stpry night. There is also music, Bulgarian bands nad Tunesian bands and all sorts of music that you won't find everywhere. But I like the most is the family vibe in Mezrab. Iranian Mom and Dad are always present and make the most delicious soup ever! Sahand and his brother Alborz welcome you with a big smile and a handshake and there are volunteers behind the bar. It is so easy to meet new people due to the long breaks between every set! I love ittt!!!!!

My favorite thing ot do though is come here early with friends on a Friday select a nice spot in the pillows and just relax before the show starts and stay as long as possible chichatting after the show. Most relaxing feeling ever :)

Going to the Mezrab gives you Amsterdammer cred. It's as diverse as the city itself, with storytelling (mostly in English), music, and dance. The music is better than anyone has a right to expect given the low prices -- it's joyous and thrilling. The storytelling ranges from first time tellers to professional comics trying out new and interesting material. I have no problem staying for 6 hours at a stretch, but I am who I am. I recommend making a night of it. There's usually good Persian soup on hand for low prices. It's good for most ages. Most audiences range in age from 18-80. You can go alone and feel right at home. If you're lonely, talk to the bartenders.

Mezrab is a fantastic place in a very interesting area in Amsterdam. There is music, storytelling and many more in a very familiar athmosphere. Nowhere else it's so easy to get in contact with a mostly international audience. Hanging out at the bar, listening to some live music or friday nights to a story - this makes this place unique in Amsterdam.

Don't miss it out.

Nice place, with down to earth atmosphere - on the docks next to the river. Affordable drinks. Nice line-up of artists.
