Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

We usually visit the Urban Cacao on Hidenstraat when visiting Amsterdam. This time around we passed by their larger shop and small scale chocolate factory on Rozengracht. Opening hours 10am to 6pm (Tues to Sat) and 12pm to 6pm (Sun and Mon).

Here you find a wide assortment of white, milk and dark chocolate bars mixed with interesting combinations of ingredients. Bars are wrapped in unique and attractive packaging. You can also sample the various chocolates on offer. Range is excellent, quality is pretty good.

On this occasion we purchased 15 bars to give away and to enjoy back home. Most enjoyed included the White Chocolate with Gingerbread and Orange, Milk Chocolate with Stroopwafel, Milk Chocolate with Granola and Milk Chocolate with Caramel and Sea Salt. The dark chocolate single origin chocolates are good but we less enjoyed as mixed bars.

We also had a nice cup of hot chocolate at Urban Cacao this time around. The cup was thick, rich and tasty - a really nice cup, one we'd really like to have again on a cold winter day. They also sell truffles, macaroons and a few other chocolate related goods at Urban Cacao.

Overall, this was a really good stop. Our friends have enjoyed the Urban Cacao bars we'vn given them. So have we. Will return again the next time we are in Amsterdam.

Had I known my suitcase would be 5 lb under the limit, I would have bought more chocolate. I was standing in front of the shop next door and smelled chocolate. The store looked , almost, as good as it smells. The bars are beautifully wrapped, and taste even better. Peanut butter, pistachios, caramel, stoopwaffles, and my favorite, raspberry macaroons, are enrobed in smooth, delicious chocolate.

Charming little chocolate (and other sweets) shop with a very friendly and helpful gentleman behind the counter! You just can't leave this place without grabbing some chocolates and macarons...or a lot. Has some nice teas, coffees and lemonades available too.

This review is based on a visit to its affiliate shop on the Huidenstraat, which has opened just a few weeks ago.

The chocolate brownie as well as the meringue cookies were carefully (hand-)made and enjoyable, albeit a bit excessively sweetened. The espresso was good too.

Service by the young lady and two kids - well, isn't it child labour? - was slow but friendly. The bill for two persons came to a reasonable 13 EUR.

A very good alternative to Madame de Pompadour or any other patisseries in Amsterdam.

We were staying at Jackie O's B&B (Reviewed by me separately), which is a couple of minutes' walk away. Nobody told us about this heavenly place and we practically stumbled onto it.....What a divine stumble it was!!!
Urban Cacao is a chocoholic's dream, which applies to both my wife and myself....
You walk into a brightly lit modern store which is open to the actual chocolate factory behind the store, allowing to watch how these utterly delicious chocolate products are made.
The smell and sights drive you up the wall, and you cannot help but start sampling and purchasing the beautiful and yummy cacao derivatives.
The pralines are wonderful. The brownies (Especially those filled with caramel) are out of this world. The chocolate bars (Difficult to choose from a wide selection) are the best. And last but not least - If you like macaroons, these are the best you'll ever taste!!!!!! Try them all!!!
We left with overweight, nicely distributed between our bellies and our bags.......
Don't Dare Visit Amsterdam Without Stopping at Urban Cacao!!!!!! Be Warned!!!!

I must quickly preface the review by saying that these people obviously are passionate and knowledgeable about chocolate and engaged, devoted. Their hot chocolate drinks are among the best I've had, the shop interior is cosy, service focused and polite, and the truffles likely delicious. So, I would still recommend it.
My disappointment comes from two points about their chocolate bars. Firstly, they are misleadingly priced and labelled: 'blended' bars are supposedly almost 8eur, and 'grand cru' almost 6. I chose two which were labelled on the bar 'grand cru' and told that they were 'blended', whereas other bars had the word 'blended' on them, not these grand crus.
The answer I got acknowledged the obvious confusion, a muttering about how these grand cru bars were blended in Amsterdam and not abroad, but there was no way for a consumer to know this hidden history - if a price label says one thing linking it obviously to a labelled product, but it turns out to be the opposite, this is very poor consumer relations. I was also not offered to retract or be compensated for this obvious error on their side, or of misleading pricing info.
As unpleasant as this was, so be it - good chocolate should cost more on the planet. But to make matters worse, the bars, both of the grand crus I bought, had bloom on them. They were either quite out of date or else had gone through a temperature change. Actually inedible. Among the only times I've ever had to throw out chocolate. And the 16eur they cost.
So perhaps ask for details about when the bars were packaged before purchasing. This could have been a sorry coincidence, that both of my chosen bars were not only misleadingly labelled/priced but faulty as well.
Otherwise, i applaud their efforts in the cacao world.

A chocolatier that I really like in Amsterdam is Urban Cacao on Hidenstraat. This is a good place for creative handmade chocolate bars. Opening hours are 10-6pm daily.

During our recent visit we purchased 8 different chocolate bars, taking them back to HK. Each tasted nice while several were really good. Most enjoyed were the 1) milk w/ caramel and sea salt, 2) milk w/ stroopwafel, 3) white w/ gingerbread orange and 4) dark w/ salted almond and rosemary.

Look forward to visiting Urban Cacao the next time we are in Amsterdam to pick up more of their creative chocolate bars.

Wish we could have spent more time here but we just happpened to walk by and discover it fairly close to closing time. We were drawn in by the delicious smell and tasted every sample they offered, eventually settling on orange gingerbread white chocolate and a dark peanut butter cup which were wonderful. It would have been lovely to see the pastry chefs work in the open kitchen if we had got their sooner. Only slight issue is the lady serving everyone had quite a stoney face.
