Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. The windmill part is cute, but the actual taproom was on the side of the windmill. The service wasn’t too welcoming, we asked for recommendations but we’re not given them. The first beer we asked for wasn’t given available on tap. We stayed for a while trying almost every beer they had, some were okay, some weren’t great. The place fills up quite quickly with children to older men. The vibe is okay but we didn’t feel too welcomed as a whole.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 4, 2023
- Snoop232 contributionsGreat beer, wonderful atmosphereThis is a good one! Make sure you stop by if you like the pub/brewery vibe. We went there at around 5pm and it was already completely packed. As you would expect, lots of noise and laughter, but didn’t see anyone getting too drunk or causing trouble. The small food snacks of local stuff were just brilliant, and not expensive. Loved it!Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 26, 2023

Bar staff are excellent exponents of their craft, knowledgeable and helpful. Try a beer paddle, super way to cover lots of the flavoursVisited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 4, 2023
- Robbie H10 contributionsCool place with great house brewed beers! We spent a very enjoyable rainy afternoon here last week. They serve there own beers which I found to be very good. The flights were a good way to try several. The have a good selection of snacks. We liked the food plate with cheeses, sausage and more. The Zatte and Natte are excellent beers.Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 23, 2023
- Christopher LDenver, Colorado332 contributionsA must visit for beer fansThe brewery is in a lovely spot beneath the windmill, which is a great start. Then the beer is fresh and tasty. Samplers are a good way to go to see which you will like best. Food menu is limited but adequate. A great vibe with locals, young people and tourists all very "hoppy!"Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 2, 2023

But the next day we visited their Voldenpark location and the the staff and beers were on point. The beer is great and the place is nice, but the staff are not. One member of staff was extremely rude to me. He served someone before me who was there after me at the merch stand, I said I was first and he said no he wouldnt serve me next and went on to insult me! Ive never experienced such terrible customer service. I love craft beer and places like this, but I would not recommend it with such a horrible member of staff. Shame.

I got there in the middle of the afternoon so there were not a lot of people there yet. This gave me some time to talk with several of the employees. They were very knowledgeable, very helpful and friendly. The beer select was extensive and there were some good sausage and cheese boards available.

Was looking forward to my visit after such great beer and a great time on my last trip to Amsterdam and this place. However, despite my best efforts to enjoy a beer without too much risk, I was told to move up, to allow a groups of 4 to sit right next to me. I was already sat outside away from the crowds as it was. This spoiled my beer and I left immediately. Very disappointed and a massive waste of time making the visit. I should have just bought a bottle from the supermarkets as it would have been a dambed site safer.
Shame on you guys. You must properly enforce this, not just appear to be doing so.
Very disappointed indeed. As a brewer myself, I was really looking forward to my visit. I genuinely wish I had spent the time doing something else. Everywhere else I have visited has taken covid measures seriously since I have been here. Apparently not you guys.

Bar had a great atmosphere, it does get busy into the evening but we managed to get a table. We started with a beer flight then just drank the ‘easy lager’ for the next few drinks. Really reasonably priced too. Would definitely recommend. And nice that you get to see the windmill next door while you’re there.

After spending the morning being tourists and heading into the afternoon it seemed to be the right time to take a dive into Amsterdam’s non-Heineken/Amstel/Grolsch brewery scene. Using our transit passes we hopped on the number 24 Tram to quench our thirst at Brouwerij 't IJ, located in a former bath house named Funen, next to the De Gooyer windmill (the tallest wooden mill in the Netherlands at 87.3 feet high. It is registered as a National Monument).
The brewery was founded by Kaspar Peterson, a former musician, in 1985 and was one of several small breweries that opened in cities around the Netherlands in response to consumers' dissatisfaction with beer brewed by the larger companies. They brew twelve standard beers and three seasonal beers, besides limited-edition beers. We ordered one apiece and settled into a picnic type table in a side room and watched those around us drinking and consuming what appeared to be good looking food. We enjoyed our beers and promised ourselves we'd be back for more later in our stay.

Went here with my boyfriend on our trip to Amsterdam (we are from New York State). It was a lot of fun and really beautiful. Authentic Dutch food (as much as that exists) and flights of Dutch beer made for a fun evening, and the windmill is super cool! We went after dark, and there were all these lovely lanterns lighting the area. We sat outside, and it was so nice! It's also right by the water. It was really beautiful and romantic. Definitely recommend!

Ed, I know you posted this a few years ago - but can you recall what tram you took to get there, and where to catch it ?
I am flying out in July for two nights elsewhere before reaching Amsterdam on Sunday - before flying back to the UK on Monday.
This brewery looks worth a visit on an hopefully sunny Sunday evening.
Have you any idea what Amsterdam was like in general on a Sunday - it doesn't have to be mad, in fact its good if its not as the first two nights will be big drinking nights, but it would still be nice if the bars are open and have a decent atmosphere.
Thanks
Andy

Do you have good wifi at the bar? I am looking to come have a few beers and watch my home countries - finland's - basketball match on my phone (because I'm guessing you don't show finnish YLE channel in the bar tv :)

Hi Antti H, there is no TV in this bar I'm afraid. There is free wifi but we only used it for texting. I'm not sure how strong a signal you'll need to stream a match.

Most of the negative reviews were about the service not the beer. Are you taking this seriously?

And well, no it's not self-service! Read my review. it's the guy serving the beer who was impolite and aggressed me. The question is for the brewery owners/management

Noi eravamo in 8 e ci siamo divisi in 2 tavoli. Se possibile, io proverei a prenotare per non perdere un'occasione di un buon assaggio!
