We did the cheese tasting (5 cheese and 3 glasses of wine, plus fig bread, grapes and water) in the beautiful room above the shop on Damrak. Timmel was our expert guide and he was very knowledgeable and friendly, he also gave us some advice about places to go out in Amsterdam (he ran the entire tasting session in fluent English). It was very relaxed, fun and interesting. I would go back again and recommend it strongly. It costs 15€ and you can book in the shop or online, or just turn up and hope there will be space. You receive a 10% discount voucher for the shop (to be used at any time) along with your ticket for the cheese tasting. The cheeses that you taste upstairs are different to the ones you can taste in the shop.

Located a few minutes from Centraal station where the very friendly and knowledgeable staff took us through the tasting of several cheeses accompany by an appropriate selection of wines. The tasting room above the shop was quiet & relaxed and we did not feel rushed at all. The measures were generous and appreciated. We can definitely recommend this to any one who appreciates cheese and is interested in the history and making of cheese.

I absolutely LOVE Old Amsterdam cheese and always buy some when I visit Amsterdam. I jumped for joy when I saw a store on Damrak, hoping for cheese and merchandise.

However my joy turned to disbelief and horror when I saw the prices being charged for my favourite Netherlander cheese. 405g blocks were being sold for ~€14 each while I buy mine at Albert Heijn and Jumbo for less than €7. I can buy it cheaper than €14 imported into the UK!!

Westland, the company that makes Old Amsterdam, is probably joining the large number of chain tourist cheese shops that have seemed to open in Amsterdam recently. They did have overpriced "gift packs" but if you want cheese, just go round the corner to Albert Heijn and buy it at the regular non-tourist price. I thought it was only the Schiphol Airport shops that inflated it's cheese prices, but you can add this to the list as well now.

I'll still pop in to this shop when I'm in Amsterdam, but only for the free cheese sample, then I'll go buy it in the supermarket!! This store, and stores like it do Dutch cheese a great disservice by making it appear dearer than what it is, and therefore less likely to buy it again.

I was walking at night and suddenly I saw a mouse in the shop eating cheese from the ground and running all around, then another one came out walking behind. I couldn't the live my eyes such a place should be more hygienic and clean full of mice jumping on the cheese.

Ps: check attached photos.

We do our best to perform pest control in the most animal friendly manner. Unfortunatly the cheese shops are situated in buildings dated from the 1800's so its very difficult to shut all the small holes. The cheeses are all vacuumed packed and all the cheeses are checked every morning, and we will throw it away when the cheese is not good for sale. Thanks for your reply and we will try harder to keep the shops free from mices.

As a local I would never buy cheese here. The cheeses from Old Amsterdam are over priced and actually not from Amsterdam. They are also not old. I would recommend to go to a real cheese shop and ask for 'belegen or oude biologische boerenkaas'. For less money you get better quality.

Here a word from a native Dutch.

The reality of this ‘old’ cheese is of course that this brand only exists since 1985.

But how about the cheese, is it ok, or really good?
Just look at the ingredients; it has sodium nitrate (e251) as a preservative. And it may LOOK old, but they use the cheap color trick. Carotene e160a or Anatto E160b a brown/ yellowing dye.

There are many better cheeses in the Netherlands that do without these tricks.

With the yellow dye, they hope you think this is really old cheese. But now you know, search for the three ingredients only; milk, rennet, salt. Thats it!

So if you are a tourist, and see deep yellow cheese...take a look to the ingredients!

If this review comes handy, please give me a 👍, Thx!

The Old Amsterdam Cheese Store specializes in cheese tourism. They offer cheese tastings and vacuum-sealed cheese souvenirs so you can take home this Dutch specialty. A live sommelier will guide you through the 5 kinds of cheese and 3 types of wine. One variety of cheese was over 10 years old! The sommelier explains how the cheese was made and how to professionally taste the cheese. Throughout the experience, the sommelier will offer samples of complementing wines and talk about how to pair wines and cheeses together. Not only is this an informative experience, it is also a flavourful one I highly recommend to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Our family love cheese and our daughter's favourite is Old Amsterdam. The shop is well set out with its tasting table and in prime locations around the city.

The tasting is up the staircase. One young man presented it. Fairly busy. The hour is wasted as he is working solo and goes around filling up each person's wine glass. What he fills is about 30-40mls each time. He does try to chat but, it's a bit lack lustre. I didn't come away feeling more knowledgeable about pairing wine to cheese.
As mentioned previously time wasted in the 1 hour experience by him walking back and forward to get the different wine each time. Surely he knew what wines he would need.
Actuallyly quite distracting when other staff kept coming up stairs to access another door to a stairwell on next floor when tasting was happening.

Nope def wouldn't reccomend.
