This is an outstanding modern concert hall. The Grote Saal (Big Hall) is an excellent venue for soloists and chamber music. Acoustics are superb. The only problem is that the seats step up only every two rows, so it's much easier to see over tall Dutch people if you are in an even numbered row.

A great little adventure taking the fast, free and frequent ferry located behind the Station. Sat outside on the theatre’s outdoor terrace. Good bottle of reasonably priced Chablis and a couple of typically Dutch snacks. It was a lovely warm sunny day with great views across to the city, chilling away from the bustle.

My husband and I were staying in the Movenpick Hotel and thought we would while away a couple of hours on the deck outside the Muziekgebouw's restaurant on our last day, between checking out and waiting for our train to the airport.
The outside area is superb, with normal tables as well as large "sofas" (made of a sort of strong plastic I think) with big comfy cushions on them. The view over the water is spectacular and the whole atmosphere is very relaxing. Most of the menu (being a seafood resturant) looked somewhat pricey, but we each had an excellent omelette with tasty and fresh home made bread for only 8 euro, which we thought was very reasonable. We were so relaxed, we really didn't want to leave! Highly recommended for a lazy afternoon, especially if the sun is shining.

On the website you can buy tickets for a special tour around Muziekgebouw 't Ij. This encompasses a lunch and a 2 hour tour of the building.
The lunch was perfect and started off great.
However the tour was simply not good. Even though we had a tour operator which passionately told us about the place she simply did not have anything interesting to mention. Maybe our expectations were too high but for 21 euro's per person I expect to hear about the architecture; the construction techniques; the acoustic behaviour of the room and why certain design choices have been made; a tour of the complete building including Bimhuis; etc. etc.
Unfortunately none of that.
We walked around the building obtaining mediocre information and pointing out the obvious stuff (this is the toilet; this is the porter). We went to the cafeteria of the staff and to a dressing room... But the best one was to see that there is a loading dock for the trucks where they bring in supplies.....
We spend literally 10 minutes in the main room. And there was a tuner present who was tuning the piano (which would have been amazing to hear!) but we were so busy with watching the toilets of the place that we came too late.
Bimhuis was not included in the tour. And the best view was not able to be seen because of a photoshoot.
Don't get me wrong; I understand that there are limitations to a building. But paying 21 euro's just for a lunch and a boring walk around with no spectucalar information is not done for me.
Music wise the place is amazing and I suggest everyone to go to a show! That should be the only reason to go there. The tour could be improved way more.

The Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ concert hall seems much less known than the world-famous Concertgebouw but this venue definitely worth visiting for those who are into classical music, particularly modern one. There is a wonderful view of Amsterdam from the glass-walled foyer. They offer free drinks in the intermission (which is also the case in Concertgebouw). The only problem that may be encountered by those who do not speak Dutch is that their site is almost completely in Dutch and buying tickets is a hassle. But once you get through it you will surely enjoy what you hear and see in this modern hall.

I bought tickets ahead to hear the Calefax jazz quintet as advertised as Jazz world music!!
We are jazz fans and were looking forward to discovering the new hall in the north port of Amsterdam.
24€ a person and on Wednesday 28 pm we had to sit to a totally different program: young artists of the year being interviewed at length,in Dutch, and music from medieval times by the Calefax and another strings quarter playing their version of Shostakovich...a modern duo, which was socially rewarding... And "jazz world music"??
We left at the interval, super disappointed.
The new building is huge and freezing: concerte with high ceilings.. not at all welcoming.
If you arrive early, book at the restaurant otherwise unfriendly staff refuses to serve you a drink although there are tables empty and you could go into the hall...
The bar was closed too and it became a cold and unfriendly experience, unfortunately.
We love Amsterdam and Holland, but this was a huge disappointment.

Not so many congresses, including medical congress, which took place in a music concert hall! Although it was the idea of some people in the organising committee, it is the venue that made matters providing unique experience for the attendees. It was just great experience of learning inside a high quality of room acoustic.
The other best point that makes the venue one of the best spots is the big terrace right in front of its foyer. The Amstel river on your view!
