- Fiona L10 contributionsLate night cheese run!Raced across Amsterdam on our last night to get the Old Gouda before they shut at 8pm. We made it and so, so happy we did! We accidentally stumbled across this museum on our first day exploring. You can taste test all the cheeses and jams/chutneys, absolute heaven!! I am not entirely sure why we left without buying on the day, I think I was overwhelmed and would have ended up with all of them! I Couldn't stop thinking about that Gouda and I was not coming home without it! Currently enjoying the taste of the Dam from our own home, alongside a delicious cranberry dip and some Stroopwafels for dessert! I'd come back for this place alone. Thanks for being fab 👌🏼 🤩Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 12, 2024
- Ferrin CChicago, Illinois16 contributionsAmazing CheeseKind and enthusiastic staff. LOTS of cheeses to try and packaged appropriately for air travel. The "museum" in the basement is small and informative, in my opinion offers something special compared to the cheese shops found in the tourist areas. Worth going off the beaten path!Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 5, 2024
- Lily HuWashington DC, District of Columbia1,888 contributionsCheese galoreWhat a great experience and activity. If you like cheese, this is the spot for you. There is a small history of cheese making in the basement (free to visit) but the best part is sampling all the cheese on the main level! There is no shortage - probably sampled over 12 cheeses and still didn't get to all the options. Staff is constantly replenishing and helpful for questions. We found a new favorite! Cheeses are vacuum sealed and ready to fly. One downside is, some people go from bowl to bowl with their one toothpick rather than a new toothpick every cheese bowl. There should be signage for hygiene purposes.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2024
- A83Berkshire, United Kingdom116 contributionsNearly went into a cheese coma but would do it againI have never eaten so much cheese in my life! There was so many variations and different cheeses to try. If you happen to find one you love then all of the cheese is packaged specifically to be able to go through customs as long as you don’t open it meaning you’ll be able to take as much cheese back with you as you want! The price for the cheese is pricey but right considering the flavours of the cheese and how rich it is. They even have a small museum in the basement where you can dress up and pay €2 to have a photo taken whilst also reading about the historyVisited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 28, 2024

If I had paid for the exhibit like I did at the tulip museum I would have given a star less. But since it was free, an extra star. Tasted some free cheese upstairs and downstairs saw the free museum which is really a quick exhibit about how to make cheese. We purchased one of 2 things as a thank you.

There are quite a few good cheese shops scattered around Amsterdam. One that we have enjoyed visiting and buying cheeses at over the years is the fun Amsterdam Cheese Museum on Prinsengracht, just across the canal from the Anne Frank House. Opening hours are 9am to 7pm daily. There is a small museum in the basement level while the cheese available for tasting and purchase on found on the ground floor.
Lots of good gouda varieties, we also like their Old Amsterdam style hard cheese and during this most recent trip, purchased a softer goat truffle cheese as well. All cheeses are vacuum sealed and easy to travel back home with. We've done this several times in years past and as well as recently, all cheeses have arrived back home in very good condition and have tasted great.

My partner and I hadn’t planned to go here however when we stumbled across it we loved it! So much fun. I don’t even like cheese but I like cheese now, they have something for everyone. So much cheese wow! So many samples on the last day my partner and I just went into every cheese shop and filled up on free samples, cheese museum initiated this as it was just so much fun. Pink cheese, green cheese, blue cheese, even black cheese. Don’t get me wrong the museum is very small but it’s free! And very fun! 10/10 recommend. Cheese + free cheese = happy wife.

Our tour guide suggested we visit the Amsterdam Cheese Museum, and we were so glad she did. They have samples all around the store to taste many, many cheeses- along with numerous dips to sample. We purchased several blocks of cheese, then returned a few days later and purchased more to bring back home. We never made it to the Museum downstairs- I am sure it is great. Go for the cheese!!!

Best cheese of all Amsterdam, they have many kind of different cheeses and they let you try them. Also, the employees are really nice, they even talk to us on our original language, cool people. To end the review, just say that the museum is little but really nice

We had a lovely hour here. It's very small AND make a note that it's right next door to the Tulip Museum so an idea to do them together.
Stacked, as you would expect, with cheeses. And goodness aren't they tasty. We bought far more than we should have. Downstairs is the story of Gouda from the grass in the field to the finished product. A few nice touches and souvenirs downstairs to make it more interesting for children. How could you visit Amsterdam and not go to the best place to buy the cheeses.

Does anyone know if they open on December 25th and 26th (Christmas)? Thank you.

The herb cheese that I brought home as a gift for a friend is very hard on the outside, presumably this is what keeps it fresh for a year? What is the best way to cut the cheese?
Written March 15, 2017
In most cases the cheese you buy has a layer of wax, usually coloured (green, red, strong yellow, sometimes even blue) that you should take of before eating. It's role is to keep the cheese fresh for a longer period of time. There are also types of cheese that have some kind of crust, harder then the rest of the cheese, ususaly brown. That one is eatable. Hope it helps

Are there any custom restrictions to what and/or how much cheese can be brought back from Amsterdam to the United States?
Written September 28, 2016
You can bring back any of the Dutch cheeses no problem.
