The Black Heritage Amsterdam Tour is about the 'hidden histories' of the African Diaspora from the 17th century to the present and is for everyone who is interested in learning more. We travel throughout the city canals on-board a classic canal boat as we explore the history visible in the landmarks, architecture, canal houses and art. The full tour includes a visit to a national museum, and much more. We offer regular tour every Sunday at 12:00 & private group tours Monday - Saturday.

Jennifer took us on the walking tour through Amsterdam and it was an amazing experience. She did a great job giving us a tour on the city while focusing on the black heritage which is always fascinating to hear. I highly recommend this tour if you would love to learn about the city!

What a powerful learning experience focused on historical narratives related to Black heritage and history in Amsterdam! The program is a fascinating combination of a walking, canal boat, and museum tour all in one. Jennifer is a genuinely passionate, engaging, and deeply knowledgeable guide. She encouraged us to ask questions, think critically, and share our thoughts with the group, making... More

I highly recommend taking this tour with Jennifer! It is a very powerful and informative experience. Jennifer is such a wealth of knowledge and this tour is so unique in that this history is unfolding and being discovered as Jennifer speaks- literally. What Jennifer is researching and sharing is still being uncovered and this is the only way to learn... More

I organised my university the Das Choreography and Das Research departments of the Das Graduate School to do the tour on a Sunday. We where a large group to organise. Jennifer was incredibly patience during the whole planning to make it possible for all of us to come. She even accommodated the time, since some of us had Sunday service.... More

This tour was a game changer. I've lived in Amsterdam for 11 years but wow did I learn a lot about ways to look at the visual clues of the city. The tour pointed out and decoded signs of Black involvement in the establishment of the city and Dutch wealth and identity, issues which are politically, culturally, socially so important... More

I'm so glad this tour was recommended to me. This was one of the most informative and surprising tours I've ever taken. The hidden history of the Black influence and presence in Amsterdam is deep and rich. This is coming from someone well versed in Black history. The tour is both extensive and engaging and suitable for all adults, but... More

This tour is a Must Take if you're in Amsterdam, Holland. The tour I took began at the Rijks Museum and then culminated on a visually enlightening cruise down the Amsterdam canals. Each tour section was packed with great information. The tour participants are drawn into the art discussion and encouraged to participate In discussing the selected art pieces being... More

3 hours guided tour started at the National Museum in Dam Square with Jennifer Tosch and Jillian. The tour was a good sight-seeing with the legacy of slavery. The Sinterklaas (Dutch Santa Claus) celebration and his black assitant Black Pete (Zwarte Piet). Jennifer had drawn an analogy with the minstrel shows in the US. We saw many sites on our... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
