    A unique museum in Amsterdam
I went on a weekend trip to Amsterdam and didn't plan my stay. When I searched for interesting places near my hostel I found the pipe museum. Even as someone who just started pipe smoking it was a very interesting visit. I felt very welcome. The museum itself is a collection of pipes, there is nothing to read so someone was there to guide me. The tour through the small house was very interesting and the guide was very helpful in answering questions also talking about his own experiences and preferences concerning pipes which made the tour more of a dialogue which I really enjoyed. All in all I had a great time and would recommend ta visit. Since it is also very central and not a big museum you don't have to plan your whole day around it.
Right, you enumerate all advantages of our museum: not to big to stroll for ages, centrally located, interesting enough for anyone who is open to something new and unexpected. Thank you and ... be welcome!!

Our visit to the Pipe museum
What an absolute gem of a place! The diversity, history and artwork of the pipes is stunning. For a small fee you get to see the museum on the 1st floor where the curator will talk you through the different areas that the pipes came from, what they are made of and their significance socially. It was extremely interesting.
Fine you loved the experience visiting the Pipe Museum. Lot to see, lot to learn here! We are most proud of the fine craftmanschip that you can see in the exposed objects.

    A hidden gem
My friend and I were looking to visit a less famous museum in Amsterdam as we've been here numerous times. We came across this museum without expecting much but we were surprised by how interesting it is! We had a guided tour in french which made the experence much better as we had the full explanation about the history of pipes. Definitely worth the visit.
Right, last week we could offer with our team of volunteers guided tours in Dutch, English, French, German and Italian. In this respect we arae unique in the cultural field in Amsterdam, where English is getting the pimary language ot which even born Dutch people have to adopt...

Interesting guided tour around the museum floor, beautiful collection.
I came in the late afternoon hours ans started the guided tour at the upper floor. The pipe collection spans from the ancient civilizations and cultures of different ethnic groups and people, through the industrial and the colonial eras and to these days. You will here stories about pipe related rituals and what it symbolizes each one of them. You can take pictures inside, and even have a photo with a giant smoking pipe. It is fun and interesting history-wise, even for a non-smoker like me.
We like that you enjoyed the tour through the museum, thank you for the fine remarks.

    Smoking my pipe
I really enjoyed visiting the museum. The staff was very nice and friendly. My guide was a very professional young man. The diplay is very nice and also the house where the museum actually is. I think they should promote this museum much more. A pity that some books are only in dutch, but most of their materials it's in english. Some would say they promote 'bad habit', but smoking it's something concerning our culture and mankind.Anyway I would say a visit to this museum it is a must. It's located in one of the nicest canal in Amsterdam and it won't take you much time to visit it. At 12 o'clock I was the first visitor, and I took some great photos. Nice postcards and books are available for sell.
Thank you, we present the pipes and the associated smoking culture as a mirror of society, different on every continent. In relation to these cultural changes, the physical appearance of the pipes differ a lot. That makes the collection so interesting to explore.

We went really to see the building, not much interest in pipes...surprise! The building was nice but not unique (after all the centuries it has been modified) - but - the pipes were interesting and the guide very patient and knowledgable about all things pipe smoking. This doesn't take more than 45 minutes and if slightly qwerty topics interest you, this will be an enjoyable experience. In the guide books it seems this is a veiled retail come-on, but it really isn't: they have ancient and interesting objects lovingly presented and cared for. A true museum. Enjoy!

This is a fantastic little museum. My friend and I got a really entertaining and informative tour of their pipe collection, which is organized in such a way as to highlight the history of the pipes. It's a really eye-opening illustration of both the artistry involved in pipe-making, and the technological advancements over time which allowed the pipe to take different forms and be made of different materials. Our docent was really amazing, and we came away with a ton of knowledge about, and appreciation of, the history of pipes. You can tell the staff here is really passionate about what they do. Plus, it's in a beautiful canal house. The collection is gorgeous, but the house itself is a work of art too.

This review can only persuade visitors to step in, I guess. Thanks for your kind words. You cannot miss the pipes during a visit, but it's good that you noticed the beauty and amazing state of conservation of the 350 years ol canal house!

This charming little museum has an amazing collection of tobacco pipes from ancient times all the way through European high society. It’s really fascinating look at these artifacts, and amazing personal collection in a beautiful, canalside mansion. The guide was really interesting and helpful, and the entire experience only took about 20 or so minutes.
I came in with no background with tobacco pipes, and left with a smile on my face. I might not have chosen to pay for this experience, but if you have one of the city cards, or I Amsterdam card, it’s well worth a visit.

Very excellent docent who gave us a history of pipes and showed us displays in chronilogical order with interesting facts. We were only 3 there and enjoyed displays and unusual art associated with the tobacco habit in past centuries. Getting inside a canal house was an added bonus.

I visited the shop to buy a pipe, not to visit the museum. I quickly selected a small lower grade briar, ostensibly a Big Ben brand, and paid something north of 150 Euros, which I didn't question at the time. Took it back to my hotel and realized it was an unbranded second. My mistake, I didn't examine the pipe more closely in the shop -- I trusted the seller. Today I bough a REAL Big Ben pipe in The Hague for less than 130 Euros. Congratulations Benedict, you couldn't have done a better job fleecing this foolish American tourist.

Hi Tom, we get the pipes for the shop directly from the manufacturer, Big Ben, based in the Netherlands. So if you buy a Big Ben pipe it is a Big Ben pipe, for sure, whether it is marked or not. The workshop offers various brand marks and a slection of pipes is not marked at all. Of course there is no 'standard price' for any brand of pipes, so you could have get a Big Ben between 90 and 390 euros. Your choice!

Incredibly comprehensive collection of tobacco pipes through the ages, from the earliest clay pipes in South America, to the standard briar wood pipes our grandparents use today, and everything in between.

We were guided through the collection by an enthusiastic curator who's passion for smoking pipes shone through exceptionally. His knowledge was immense, and we were encouraged to ask questions as the displays had no accompanying text. This clearly further stoked his excitement, and it was a pleasure seeing the enthusiasm he had for these beautifully created objects.

Despite the fact that pipe smoking has now fell out of fashion, it is encouraging to see an important feature of global history being captured and preserved this way.

Well worth a visit, I guarantee you'll leave having learned something unexpectedly interesting!

Thanks for taking the time to show us around yesterday.

It was a pleasure! We regard our museum as the last keeper of this 'contested heritage', as it is seen by many historical museums nowadays. The history of the tobacco pipe, such a common object in every society around the world, deserves to be kept and told. Thank you for coming and for your very sincere comments.

I loved the visit. We had a guided tour where we were able to listen and observe the history of the pipe since its invention and motivations. It was really very interesting. It has thousands of pipes from all over the world, including the oldest ones still preserved. It's a small museum despite the huge collection and it's a little hidden, we had difficulty finding it even with the GPS because it's not well signposted. Otherwise, I recommend a visit.

You are right, the museum is not well signposted. Unfortunately, the city makes it quite difficult for us with permissions for a big sign and when you have it, they charge huge sums of 'publicity taxes'. So, this little gem stays a bit hidden, but still open for every visitor who is interested.
