About
The Sloten Windmill is a functioning draining mill and at the same time the only windmill in Amsterdam which is open daily to the public. The Mill is situated in the outskirts of Amsterdam not far from Schiphol Airport. It controls the water level in the western part of Amsterdam. This area is situated more than 2 meters below sea level. The Sloten Windmill is a rebuilt mill, dating from 1847. The whole year long the Mill can be visited daily (except Jan. 1st, April 27th and December 25 and 26). The windmill is a non-profit organisation, run by volunteers. Knowledgeable guides will gladly explain the working of the mill during a guided tour. And if possible the miller will demonstrate how the top of the mill is turned, or how to stop the mill.

A nice experience of visiting an operating wind meal at the outskirts of Amsterdam. There is an half an hour tour with a very nice local guy. You get to climb up inside the mill and see some old tools. Nice, but not a must.

We visited this place in an effort to make the most out of our I Amsterdam card and were pleasantly surprised. The guide took us on a tour of the windmill - we were able to look through all the floors and rooms and see the moving parts. The guide was really friendly and funny and she did the tour in English and German simultaneously. It was really interesting to explore the mill and learn all about how it works.

This was so worth the easy train ride out from museum campus. We went on a lark since it was included w our I Amsterdam card - oh my gosh, so much fun! I learned a ton about how windmills work, the canal system and innovations in windmill technology. I loved going to the multiple floors of the windmill and seeing the different parts. It was really amazing how much the wind was spinning the blades and how they're generating power. The tour guides are all volunteers and really know their stuff! We took the 2 train out and there are signs from the station pointing you the way so easy to find.

Slight outside center, go by tram to its final destination then a short walk (there is signs that you can follow)

There you can go inside the windmill on a tour with a lady costs 8 euro per person.very informative tour that will tell you all about the mills

If you were luck you will see windmill turned on, but unfortunately for us the winds was so strong so it was turned off

I happened to be staying nearby and discovered this place by chance, and I'm so glad I did! The guided tour of the windmill was really interesting, tying in to the city's history and the Rembrandt connection. There is a fair bit of climbing involved but worth it to see how the windmill works from the inside. There were really lovely guides as well who very kindly let me in to the building close to closing. A great way to spend an hour or so during your trip to Amsterdam.

Me and a friend went to visit the windmill this week and I am so glad we did. It was a great way to learn more about Amsterdam and see how the windmill worked. Our tour guide was brilliant and funny and taught us many facts about how Amsterdam was built and the use of windmills in Amsterdams history. This was definitely one of the best places we visited and I would recommend for anyone to visit.
