I booked the tour with myself as the main shooter with my husband as a second cellphone shooter. It was very reasonably priced, and allowing people to bring a non-camera-toting tagalong for a very low price is genius.
We met Ruud at the assigned time and found out that we were the only ones on that tour. We got the private tour for the group price. Fab!
It was a bit of a drizzly gray January day, but Ruud showed us lots of fabulous spots that we never would have found. He shared lots of historical facts and pointed out things that we would have just wandered past without noticing.
Since we booked the tour that went into the evening, we were able to try out a lot of nighttime long exposures. Ruud is fun, knowledgeable and very patient. I have a micro 4/3 camera, so many of the settings are different than a traditional full format DSLR. Ruud was incredibly helpful and patient while figuring out how to get my camera set up properly for the shots we wanted.
By the end of the tour, we felt we were walking around the city with a friend, and I had learned so many new skills to take away. It really was fabulous and one of my favorite things I've ever done on a trip.
I truly can not say enough nice things about Ruud and this tour!

I really enjoyed the 7-hours photo walk with Ruud on Sunday. We walked from the Central Station via the whole city, took streets that I’ve never seen before even though si lived in Amsterdam for a year. Ruud is really passionate about photography and very helpful to pass his knowledge to his “students”. I learned to use couple of setting on my camera that I did not use before, and to see the photo subjects from new angles. I felt like I learned a lot. The walk was also fun and interesting from history perspective, like a private museum tour, because every house and street have their story. Very well prepared! I wish the sun was not so strong, and couple of places were closed because of current measurements, but I still have a bunch of great shots and would recommend the tour to my friends. Thanks Ruud!

My wife, cell phone photograper, and l, the camera man, had our 8 hour Amsterdam Photo Safari with Ruud. You can tell that he is passionate about giving these tours and anxious to create a wonderful experience for those who hire him. He first sat down with us to determine our needs and desires.
Ruud imparted not only some knowledge about photography but also knows the city well and how to get to just the right spot to get the best shots. He also tells about the history of Amsterdam and what the markings and symbols throughout the city mean giving us a better perspective about what we are seeing.
Ruud himself has a
friendly and engaging personality and makes you feel you have just made a new friend. We highly recommend Amsterdam Photo Safari and Ruud to not only have you making some incredible photos but also to have a memorable and enlightening experience. The safari itself is on the expensive side but well worth the expense in the end.

Really enjoyed this tour. We got to learn a lot about the city that we wouldn't have otherwise known. We found Ruud's tips on composition very good. He also took us to some great spots. We loved it.

We met at the central train station to do the "4 hour Night Photo Safari" and walked within central Amsterdam. I was expecting tips, tricks and special locations for shooting good pictures (maybe some non-touristic areas) and some insider stories about Amsterdam. All it was in the end was a walk of many loops (we passed the same coffee shop 3 times!) and everything in the main central area. We did not stop much when it was worth but stopped when Tim wanted to do small talk with a participant. I was always waiting for a big attraction to come but nothing came that I could not have figured out myself! This tour could have easily started at 22:30 and finished at 0:00 as the first 3 hours were just walking around and kind of waiting for it to get dark. Once it was dark we had to rush through 3 good locations and then Tim had to rush as he had to catch his train. In the end he charged € 205.- per person(!) for this and I feel horrible. I have done many photo courses and I know by now what is worth € 200.- but here I feel robbed. I learnt more from another participant who could give me better advice than Tim himself. That was really poor and I do not recommend this at all!

First of all I’d like to offer my sincere apologies for not living up to your expectations. I'm genuinely sorry you didn’t have good time. I also want to thank you for this honest feedback (as painful as it was for me to read) as I’m always looking for ways to make the experience more enjoyable and better value for my guests.
I'll try to address all the points you made, but 1st I’d like to offer you or your friend/family a complementary tour of your choice including free tripod and bicycle hire. I will keep this offer open indefinitely and would be delighted if you gave us a second chance to make it up to you.
I've thought long and hard about your feedback, and although I think some of your points may be slightly unjust, I have already put changes into our working practices and re-worded part of my website in light of how you feel. Please let me explain how:
YOUR POINT: THE ROUTE WAS REPETITIVE.
There is one part of the tour where I walk back down the same road and this is indeed repetitive. The reason is, to walk around the other side of the road would take us a lot longer as there is no bridge over the canal on the other side. Despite the very positive feedback from using this same route for over 3 years, I will ask other guests how they feel about this and promise to change my route if it seems a common issue.
YOUR POINT: THE TOUR IS IN THE CENTRAAL AREA.
We do indeed start at Centraal Train station which is a very central location, because it is easy for people to meet there. After that I head straight to areas of the Jordaan and go further into the back canals from there.
I have always prided myself on showing even local Amsterdammers places they didn’t know exist, so on this point I feel it is slightly unfair.
YOUR POINT: I WAS DOING SMALL-TALK WITH ANOTHER PARTICIPANT.
I have to hold up my hands on this one and again I offer my honest apologies. I got caught up in a conversations that night with another guest. I always keep the tour to a very small group to enable one-on-one interactions. And that night the other tour guest was telling me about her journey in photography. I found it very fascinating, but in hindsight I feel I could have spent too long talking about it!
Since reading your comment I have done 2 things:
1st: I have paid extra careful attention to all guests since then.
2nd: It became obvious to me that I am fascinated with the journey of the aspiring photographer. So I have been developing a one-on-one coaching option so if somebody wants specific portfolio or industry advice I can help them without it encroaching on the tour. I assure you this option will be online very soon.
YOUR POINT: I AM TOO EXPENSIVE. MY PRICE IS €205 PER PERSON
While partly true, please let me explain. The price for 1 person on a 4 hour night tour is indeed €205. But I also offer more cheaper tours starting at €130 for people who feel this is out of their budget. I agree, I am a premium priced tour be we offer a personal service while booking and during the tour. We accommodate to individual needs, and our groups are kept very very small deliberately.
Indeed your partner came along as a guest for just €25 on your tour. And since it was quite cold and rainy that night I didn’t charge her any money at all, as she seemed cold and I wanted to offer something as a consolation.
YOUR POINT: THE TOUR COULD HAVE STARTED AT 22.30 AND FINISHED AT 0.00
I can see how the website can be misleading by calling it a night tour as it starts in daylight and finishes in darkness. I have made changes on my website as the night tour is indeed a mix of daylight and nighttime.
But I have always felt it was the best experience for my guests to see the city in all the different lights. So, it starts in daylight, and goes to golden hour, sunset, blue hour and then into darkness. But my apologies for not being clear on this, you are totally right.
Your point about it finishing at 0.00 - I'm afraid it's unwise to finish the tour so late because the last public transport is about that time. It would not give long enough to safely get on the last tram or train. Even though our city is very safe I feel very strongly about limiting risks for my guests who often carry expensive cameras.
YOUR POINT: I RUSHED OFF AT THE END OF THE TOUR
I again I hold my hands up to this one, and offer my apologies to you. Normally I would stay behind and chat with people but I was staying at my partners that week and the last train was cancelled due to work on the line! I did explain this to everybody but I can see that it may have looked like I was in a rush.
So although I may disagree with some of your points my main concern is the experience of our guests, and I can see that you were very dissatisfied. So from me and the team please accept our apologies and keep in mind my offer a of free tour to yourself or any friends or family.

Chris is amazing and such a natural in instruction. Chris provided both information on the city as well as the best spots to get great pictures. I am a novice, knowing only the basics and Chris was able to provide me great insight on how to get amazing shots.
We covered quite a bit of ground and I appreciated Chris' enthusiasm and ability to keep moving so I could get the most out of the tour.
In the end, I learned a valuable lessons and have some amazing pictures. Now I am trying to edit the best of them.

I am so very glad I had privilege of doing the evening photo tour with Tim! What a fantastic way to see the city and get some fantastic shots. It had rained a little, which made it even better as Tim taught me to have a good eye looking for reflections. I am an amateur photographer always looking to improve my skill, and Tim's creative side made it really thrilling to work with him. It was nice too that my husband and son were able to "tag along" for the fun too! I would definitely recommend this to any who are looking for some cool spots to get those awesome shots and/or just looking to improve in their photo skills!
We love Amsterdam and Tim made it even better!!!!
THANK YOU, TIM!!

We really enjoyed our photo tours with Tomas, he made the most of our two short days in Amsterdam. Dad and I would recommend Tomas (and Amsterdam Photo Safari) without hesitation. Yes, it is expensive, but a photo guide makes the most of your time.

This was my 3rd trip to Amsterdam and I regret not having booked this tour before. As it turned out, I was the only one booked that night so Chris was able to give me an expertly guided private tour. We set out just before golden hour, kept shooting through blue hour and continued until well after dark. I left town with some great shots and a new perspective on Amsterdam. The tour is a little pricey, but it's worth every cent. Thank you Chris for a great night out!

Our half-day tour was a fabulous experience. It was such a pleasure to see Amsterdam through the eyes of an experienced photographer who obviously loves his work and this city. His converstional and easy-going tone, specific recommendations and knowledge of successful places and technique made the day better than we imagined.
This was just fantastic.
