We attended the free light district your. Was amazing. The guide Rocco was very nice, informative and entertaining. He told us a lot about the red light district and we enjoyed it a lot. If you think about taking the tour around this district, this is definitely the one.

We booked this free tour on our first day in Amsterdam. We thought it would keep us awake to adjust to the jet lag, but it turned out to be much more. The guide was entertaining and informative. He kept us on track to see quite a few historic sites while he filled us in on Dutch history and modern life. You learn about art and architecture, canals and culture while being guided through the busy streets of the city. (And yes, of course -- don't tell mama -- we took a quick stroll through the Red Light District.) The tour is indeed free, but a generous tip for the guide is more or less expected at the end. (It isn't required). The experience was so good we were glad to pony up, and you probably will be too.

Our group had Monique as our tour guide and she was excellent. The group was quite large but she managed to get everyone's attention and keep it. She really made the group gel even though we were all varying ages and nationalities and there was lots of banter going on. Monique had lots of information which she told in an entertaining way, she welcomed questions and certainly made the tour very entertaining. I would highly recommend this tour in Amsterdam and I'll be looking up similar tours in the next city I visit .

I don’t remember the name of the guide but he mentioned tips the way too much. I’m traveling low budget so I don’t have a chance to give 10€ tip as he told us most of the time. At the end first my friend gave tip as coins. He counted and said hah is it for two of you in a angry way and that point I decided not to give a tip and he turned to me and when I said I don’t have enough cash sorry he got more angry. This is the first time I didn’t give tip because it’s not the way free walking tour is supposed to be.

Me and my boyfriend had the most awesome day in Amsterdam, with such adorable guide Britt. I've had many tours in several cities the passed year, but none like this one; Such incredible detailed fun stories and fun facts! Britt defenitly kept me interested all tour long, she's super passionate about the history of the city and found a great way of telling the stories and keeping it exciting. A fun detail for exmaple; I loved the fact she sometimes asked us some questions (about a statue for example) -which we never had the right answer to- and then started telling more about the actual answer, it makes you a part of the tour instead of just a listener. It also surprised me how she had clear, fun answers to lots of things I always questioned about Amsterdam, it showed how much she knows the city, not just the tour. We had an amazing and unforgettable day, thanks so much!

Everyday at 11:30am you can find at Beursplein 1 probably one of them best free tour of Amsterdam. The meeting point is very easy to find. The time is not too early and not too late. I would say it is perfect. It is a walking tour and it lasts for around 2 hours, it ends around 14:00pm. It is very funny and the guides know how to engage the people.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS:
In this tour you will visit the Red Light District, the Chinatown of Amsterdam, the old Jew District, the Nieuwmarkt, the Dam Square and you finish at the Homomonument. You'll pass through different districts and you'll notice the difference between older and newer buildings and how the city is changing.

STORY:
The story presented by the guide is divided in 3 main periods "so that you won't have to try to remember date you'll forget anyway" :) . And the tour is organized in such a way that you go through each period one after another along the path and you won't get confused. Here a few topics of the different stories: the "horny" sailors, the red light district, Multatuli, the inclined buildings, chinatown, De Waag, the dutch "original" naming method for everything etc...

STAFF:
Our guide, Sarah, was so nice. She told us a lot of stories about the city, all very interesting. She told us some places to eat something good and also the main events that were going to occur in those days. She even told us how much is an apartment in Amsterdam center per meter square (of course someone asked her). To tell how good was the tour I can say that I still remember almost everything after one week (I already forgot what I ate yesterday!! Just saying).

TIPS:
Try to ask how to say "88 beautiful canals" in ducth. For a not-dutch person it is almost impossible! :) .
You tour is free so you don't have to pay...but the truth is that you'll give money anyway. So here another tip: pay the lunch to your guide :) . You'll pass some more time listening to other stories.

I did not follow other tour so I cannot actually compare with others.
But for me it still remains a MUST DO experience in Amsterdam.

We booked this online before we went and because it was free we didn't expect much. How wrong were we. Obviously you have to like walking. We were given information about Amsterdam going back hundreds of years. We were taken to places we had not heard of e.g The Church In The Attic. We were given advice on how much we should pay for things and were the best coffee shops and cheese shops are. We were not sold anything. Its advice you can take or leave. We walked around with people from all over the world and we all got chatting. At the end of the walk (which was about 2hrs) you pay your guide what you think the tour is worth and there is no pressure to pay anything. All of the people on our tour gladly paid. It also helps you get your bearings if your a first time visitor to the city. We have decided that we will look for these tours whenever we go on a city break.

This tour was absolutely fantastic! It was super cheap (free! But the best thing to do is tip at the end although it's not required) Lee was our tour guide. She spoke excellent English and had really informative AND really interesting stories to tell. I would recommend doing it first on your trip because you can get some great ideas of places you'd like to visit. The tour took just over 3 hours with pretty relaxed walking and covered I think almost all of the older city. We went on a busy Saturday in a full tour (40 people) and they mentioned that you can reserve spots online because if you get there and all the spots are taken up then you're out of luck.

We had Ilya Brodsky as our guide. Though he knew quite a lot about Amsterdam, he yelled at his assistant (in front of the whole group) at the beginning of the tour, mentioned we should tip the cost of the theater per person at the end of the tour, mouthed off to another guide during the tour and verbally insulted a couple to our group for not tipping enough at the end of the tour. This is clearly not a free tour!! The information was great but with aggressive guides demanding set amounts for tips, maybe the tours shouldn’t be free. He even had the audacity to pass around his name tag for us to get his name for a “good review”. You’d clearly need to make sure you don’t insult anyone if you’re asking for reviews! Several people dropped out before the end of the tour because they’d simply had enough. I’d rather pay for a tour than deal with exorbitant tipping expectations at the end! I will be sure to never book another “FREE” tour in the future since it’s clear they are anything but free!

I do not get tipped on my job, nor do I expect it. I do my work and receive pay from my employer. I do not harass my clients for tips or make them feel bad for not tipping enough. After all, if someone is booking a FREE tour, they are most likely on a budget. They should not be made to feel bad or embarrassed!! Never again! This tour is not free! Beware, if you don’t plan to tip the amount of a tour you will likely be insulted by the guide.

We took this tour along with another 14-15 people. Monique out guide was outstanding. She was very informed, interesting to listen too. We visited places that we would never have know even existed. I would strongly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience and see things that a tourist wouldn't normally even know about.

Thank you very much Monique
