Our room at the Waldorf Astoria was not ready for our check-in so we walked a couple of blocks to explore the Hermitage Museum. I’ve always wanted to go to the Hermitage St. Petersburg, so thought this would be a good start as they had collections from there, as well as from other museums. We purchased tickets when we arrived. We were very fascinated by all we saw, read and how old so many of the art pieces were. The Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age took my breath away. I could have sat in the Gallery room for a coupe of hours, on the comfortable benches, taking the magnificent works of art in. What a wonderful experience it was!

Wonderful jewels displayed with the clothing these people wore. Very interesting. Not too crowded when we arrived but quickly filled up. Free audio guide. A bit irritating because it’s a hand held device which is triggered by touching sensors on the walls near the exhibits. That means one is constantly competing with anyone else trying to do the same. Then struggling to see the exhibit being described. Also - the sensors are too high for use by wheelchair visitors. Thoughtless.

In this beautiful building which used to be a woman’s retreat is housed, in conjunction with its sister site in St. Petersburg, the largest art collection in the world. Unfortunately we were not allowed entry due to the shutdown of the building for the COVID -19 Pandemic. Hopefully we will all get the opportunity in the future as it looks stunning on the bank of the main canal.

It wasn’t an easy place to find, we entered through a garden area with a lovely cafe and lots of outside seating. The reception area was light and airy, everything was laid out well and the audio guide was great, it had a really interesting range of art, historical pieces and accompanying film footage, I learned a lot. There is also a good restaurant with loads of comfy seats, plus they have a robot! A great day out.

We visited the Kandinksy exhibition, but we assumed that this was in addition to the general/continuous collection of H'art Museum (at the box office that assumption was not contradicted either). So that is NOT so. You pay 22.50 (normal rate) ONLY for a somewhat small exhibition of Kandinksy. It felt a bit dead, and the flow of (way too many!) visitors was not good: a constant congestion at the (first) passage to the next rooms. Museum is underdressed. There is no atmosphere (mainly through intermediate corridors / stairs). I asked an employee what time the museum is open, she couldn't tell?! The waiters in the cafe are abundant but not easy or really serviceable (so little interest in side jobs?). There is also no cozy atmosphere in the cafe. Actually, there is nothing left of the allure that the original Hermitage once had.

Recently I visited the H'Art Museum with my family to see the Kandinsky exhibition. The museum offers an interesting and beautiful insight into the life and development of the painter Wassily Kandinsky. We enjoyed the way his early works are rendered and how his style evolved over the years.
However, we had hoped to see more of his later works, which in our view have more depth and expression. The exhibition was fine, but we might have expected a little more of it.
A small minus was that, despite having a Museum Card, we still had to pay 5 euros per person for admission to this particular exhibition. That felt a little unfortunate.
What is a nice plus is that the Amsterdam Museum and the Museum van de Geest are located in the same building. This allowed us to visit these museums after the Kandinsky exhibition, which made our morning complete. All in all a great experience.

I visited the Hermitage Amsterdam Museum and not the other museums in the building. I was expecting a lot more (like more about the history of the city itself, its different neighbourhoods, etc.) The exhibitions were random and I didn't really see how they were connected (like dresses made of feathers, and information about the housing crisis, videos where locals talked about how they found a place to live in the city, etc.) also it seemed as though the place was going under refurbishment, and there weren't a lot of places to sit down. It was also difficult to find because the location moved pretty far away from its original location, so it took me over an hour to get to it in the end (other people in the street were confused about where to enter as well). At least the luggage storage was free and I got to hide away from the rain for an hour or so. I expected more given the cost.

Very nice museum where you can see many nice paintings, including a few beautiful examples by Rembrandt. Nice exhibitions and the staff is very nice! Nice that the Amsterdam Museum is now temporarily located here!

The Amsterdam Hermitage is a sister to the Hermitage in Russia. The museum has apparently sent many paintings back to Russia in support of Ukraine. We saw only one notable painting that we recognized. We were on an organized tour and would have preferred to skip this stop.

The old Amstelhof, transformed into a museum within the budget (better name than the current expensive name) is a relief in terms of building.
Too bad Amsterdam Museum wants to go back to the old place after a costly renovation. Equally regrettable is the wall plaque from the old (and bygone) days that still recalls that the Russian president opened this building.
But the art (and that's what we're here for anyway) is often of a stunningly high standard. The exhibition with many works by pioneer Kandinsky is an inexorable hit. Because of the extreme complexity of his work and the enormous exuberance, coming back again is almost inevitable. However, then the surcharge applies again. Other museums then give a sticker so that there is no need to pay again.
The museum provides the visitor with useful information (never knew Wagner's Lohengrin and Monets Hooiberg could encourage someone to become an artist)
The film "creating hands" is also fascinating. Kandinsky’s hands set up a prize-worthy work of art in an extremely short time. How long would this Frenchman (eventually he was granted French nationality) have practiced this?
The other videos with an actor were not necessary, as was the firmly manned "security desk" at the entrance (with a view of the plaque in question).

Hello. We will be visiting during the first week of May, and I have an Iamsterdam City Card. Is there a special line for card holders, or do we wait in the same line as everyone else? I am trying to plan my days. How many hours should I set aside to visit the Treasures exhibit? Is it better to visit on a Friday or a Sunday, or does it make no difference?

I’m confused on which ticket to purchase. Does anyone know the difference between the “Hermitage all-in Museum Card” which is 10 Euros and the “Hermitage all-in Adults (from 12 years)” which is 29.95 Euros? I’m tempted to buy the 10 €, but I’m not sure it’s the right one for an adult for the entire Hermitage Museum. Thank you
Written April 2, 2018
There is not really a choice between the options you mention. The all-in ticket is €29.95 for adults, but if you have the Museumkaart (Museum Card) it's only €10. The Museum Card costs about €60 for a year and gives free access to lots of Dutch museums, but I'm not sure if it's available to people that don't live in the Netherlands.

The NY Times said this was good for kids. Is it? Is it good for a toddler? (2 years old)
Written July 25, 2015
You are from Brooklyn, so I am sure you have been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Do you think your 2 year old would enjoy the Metropolitan Museum? It is the same sort of museum, albeit on a much smaller scale.
I have been to the Hermitage many times. The shows and exhibits change periodically. I can say I have never been to one that would hold a 2 year old's attention. Plus if you plan to use a stroller, some of the rooms are so small that it is difficult for people to maneuver, let alone adding a stroller to the mix. The more popular exhibits get very crowded and that can be frightening for a toddler having all those people crowding around. There are many more places in Amsterdam that you and your toddler would enjoy more than the Hermitage. It is an adult museum. I an not sure what the New York Times article meant because it is not a "static" museum, so maybe they were referencing perhaps the Napoleon exhibit which could interest a 10 year old - but not a 2 year old.

How much time should I allot for this attraction? Can I buy tickets in advance and how long is the queue?
Written July 20, 2015
I went a couple of weeks ago, there was no queue at lunchtime when I visited, in terms of how long depends on how interested you are in the exhibits, I spent around 2 hours altogether and visited both exhibits.
