Unfortunately, the large commercial boat tour operators put this small tour boat out of business. This was on a small open boat which could hold around10 or 15 people. Because of its size, it could travel on the smaller, narrower canals. It was a very...More

This canal boat tour is no longer in operation. The open-boat canal tour has been taken over by the folks at Boom Chicago. See the reviews of Boom Chicago for more information.

Well apparently they did loose the legal battle and do have to run the boats as a business now. It's 15 euro, you get a ticket and the boat is a lot bigger. The tour was still better than your standard canal tour though, not...More

I took this trip in August 2011 and it was such a wonderful experience!! Today I recommended the tour to a friend, who is going to Amsterdam this week. And by checking the homepage I discovered that they are no longer allowed to offer their...More

I guess I'll submit this as a post-mortem. In memoriam for the St. Nicolaas Boat Club. Keep fighting, guys! Your tour was hands-down the best thing I did in Amsterdam. I'm so sorry to hear that people won't be able to benefit from your knowledge...More

I visited Amsterdam in April. I tracked down Saint Nicholas to a bike shop who informed that they had to shut down due to some issues with the government. I was so disappointed :-( Returning home, I found this on their website: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188590-d1319323-Reviews-Eetcafe_Singel_404-Amsterdam_Noord_Holland.html I am...More

This was by far the best thing we did in Amsterdam, and quite possibly on our entire European tour! A bottle of wine, some nice cheese, and uber-informative tour guide on a beautiful sunny day made this boat ride an unforgettable experience! A cause I...More

The tour was fun, focusing on some unusual aspect of amsterdam, but mostly outside the center. We even had to bend down under the lowest bridge of amsterdam, wich was really fun. But I did not like the fact that they say the tour is...More

Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of
tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists
and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the
best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe.
Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops
of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones
Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods
such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring

We are arriving later this month in Amsterdam at around noon on a 20 hr. layover. We’ve decided we must do the free St. Nicolaas Boat Club canal tour due do the rave reviews. However the only way to book it is to go to Boom Chicago and put our names down at least two days in advance as it gets pretty full. There is no way we can do this and we are afraid we will surely miss the boat...oops! So would anyone be so kind as to offer to put our names down at Boom Chicago if you are in the...More

Anyone know if the St.Nicolaas Boat tours are up and running again? According to their website they were closed for the winter and would resume in the spring... We will be in Amsterdam at the end of April...25 -28th...is this something we can plan to do? Or are just the big tour companies running this time of year?

i had heard awhile back the city shut them down..then like you, i checked th e website and they said they would start again in the spring..i would suggest emailing them if there is contact info on the website..OR as soon as you hit town go to boom chicago and see if you can sign up.
Alternative ideas on how to enjoy the canals (6 Replies)
Hi, My wife and I will be in Amsterdam for three days at the tail end of August. We would like to ride on a boat around the canals but the Canal Bus has terrible reviews/word-of-mouth and a ride with the St. Nicolaas Boat Club cannot be guaranteed because of our short stay and their sign-up procedure. So if it turns out that we cannot find a spot with St. Nicolaas, are there other boating alternatives? We are not looking for a tour guide. We are looking more for a leisurely ride around the...More

Canal bike maybe, aka the 'diy manpowered boat'? One of the few renting systems in town which DOES allow to rent from station A and return to station B... All the best, <Erik> & [Sandya]
