Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

This hotel is ENORMOUS & absolutely beautiful. The details in this hotel are truly endless and the staff here are just so pleasant to have. We were able to rent bikes from the concierge. My only issue when visiting was that I was stuck in one of there mini elevators but other than that we had an overall great experience. We had a wonderful view of the river and lovely building across the bridge. Also the bartender made some delicious drinks after a long day of biking!

The Amsterdam Shipping House was built 1912-1926 to serve as a ticket office for six Amsterdam shipping companies. It was richly decorated in the Art Nouveau Amsterdamse School - most of this is still in place! The big meeting boardroom is a stunning example of this. Since 2007 it has become the Grand hotel Amrath. It can be visited by staying at the hotel or by taking a guided tour which is available every Sunday - in combination with lunch or High Tea at the hotel.

Go for the guided tour. It's the only advice I can give you. Even with 100 eyes, you're about to miss half of what's to see in the Shipping House (Scheepvaarthuis). They don't build these luxurious palaces anymore, not even in Dubai. The building is an architectural masterpiece of the Amsterdam School and was designed by the architects J.M. Van der Mey, P.L. Kramer and M. De Klerk. Once it united six different shipping companies, now it's a five star hotel.

Check the dates and hours and go for a guided tour! I only saw this building from the outside and the lobby but I find it amazing.
NOTE: A couple of reviews here are misplaced, and refer to Scheepvaartmuseum. Scheepvaarthuis is an ex-HQ of shipping companies, now a luxury hotel, and an architectural sight (Amsterdam School & Art deco).

Really nice place, very big and helpful staff for a guided tour. My mum enjoyed it and me and my little sister, so good for all ages, normally pretty boring for youngens but this wasn't as bad!

Literally, the Shipping House, is now a super hotel though the receptions staff are happy to allow you to wander through the reception area with its stunning stairs and windowed ceiling. Hint: take the vintage elevator on the left side of the main hallway to the top & stroll down.

This place was used to be a Shipping House and it is located not far from Amsterdam Central Station. This is one of the top 100 Dutch Heritage Sites. It was build in Amsterdam School style. It is now Amrath Hotel but the interior is not changed even the doors of the hotel rooms. All is beautiful. It's very impressive!

This hotel has restored a beautiful building and anyone can walk inside the entrance and up the stairs to see the exquisite interior. Also, check out the 1900s lift to the left of the building through the central archway. I like to ride up in it to the top floor and walk down the stairs to get the full effect.

Always love staying here and if you don't reception staff - who are actually hidden in an office to the left as you enter - do not mind you wandering around. The reception area is fab and you should take the lift - the old LHS one - to the top and look at the reception area / stairs from above especially at the beautiful ceiling at the top.
