The best way to see Amsterdam is by boat. The reason is a completely different perspective then when you are walking around. So you can watch all building sliding by while sitting down.
Boats offer headsets with information about the buildings and history of the town. They do that in multiple languages, about 9 I think. When the weather is nice you can sit outside or they slide open parts of the glass roof. When the weather is bad, you are dry and warm.
So definately do one of those tours, it will make your trip to Amsterdam complete.

During the year in all of the different seasons, and at different times of day, it is great to see the beautiful city of Amsterdam from the water. There are several different companies and options, from little boats to the more classic large boats. We went recently on the "Winter Light Festival" in a small open boat with a guide/skipper giving the commentary. I much prefer the live guide to the recorded/multi-lingual option. The guides know the city well and give lots of little extra bits of information. It is also easier to ask questions during the trip.

What a fun way to see Amsterdam from an angle you wouldn't otherwise see it. Winding through the canals of Amsterdam you will see many of the sights around the city and learn about them. While the rondvaartboten are more fun in good weather, even if it's raining, you'll still be able to see everything (although taking pictures will be harder). Lots of fun, not too expensive and definitely worth the time. Every time I'm in Amsterdam, I try to do a tour using one of the rondvaartboten companies.

Amsterdam with its more than 200 kilometer of canals has so much to offer when viewed from a Rondvaart boat. The boats take guests on a slow cruise around the centuries old canals, within one hour visitors will see a good chunk of the city, sniff up its history, hear a ton of historical facts in various languages.

When lucky, one gets a captain with some humor up his sleeve as a bonus to the adventure.

Excellent experience, must do for every visitor to Amsterdam

Went with Rondvaart because of the lower price and convenience. On board waiting to leave, employee walks around with a carafe of coffee asking if you would like some. Spouse and I said yes, thank you. He pours the coffee. That will be 4.50 Euros. Oh dear. I guess we should have known better, but it seemed like the coffee was complimentary. The tour itself is 9 Euros, so we paid half the price of the tour for weak coffee in a styrofoam cup. Did not have any cash left for a tip. lol. Other than that, typical cruise of canal. Recorded commentary in several languages. Comfortable boat.

On the rokin nr the university. A great way to see amsterdam but there must be better boat trips with a more info during the trip. Everytime the boat reversed black stinking smoke billowed out of the back. Don't know if thats normal.

20 years ago I did this trip and last week I did again, with the same team. I really enjoyed and the price was the cheapest I could find.

I joined this ride because it was quite affordable. It however became one of the exciting time in Amsterdam. The hour long ride was very pleasant, comfortable chairs, non crowded boat, and a great introduction to the city. It complements the walking tour perfectly and with 2 tours you are almost a local as you can easily locate the city landmarks. It is a nice way to relax and enjoy the city.

Spent a pleasant hour taking a trip around Amsterdam's canals and harbour. There are several choices of canal trip companies in Amsterdam, but I would definitely recommend this one. To start with the price is cheaper than a-lot of the others and the trips run frequently.

You get to see main waterway as well as several of the prettier smaller canals before going out into the harbour and returning to the starting point outside the Allard Pierson Museum. They have an interesting commentary playing (repeating in Dutch, Germany and English) and our captain also pointed out the places of interest as we went round. Very nice end to the day!
