The area
Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

We stopped here on the eve of King’s Day and enjoyed the atmosphere which included a few carnival rides and a lot of people having a good time. It seemed a mix of tourists and locals stopping by after work and getting ready for their holiday. The restaurants were nice. I was glad we stepped out of the tourist zones.

Not much to see unless you are there on Saturday or Sunday which are market days. We were there on a weekday and there were no sellers. The large building at one end of the square is architecturally interesting.
It is in Amsterdam’s “China Town” so the surrounding area was worth exploring.

This is not a site, nor any attraction. It is a nice building that looks like an old castle. There is a restaurant inside and a couple of food stalls outside. The whole area is in central Amsterdam and as such it is loaded with many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. You will be disappointed if you come just for that.

We went to this market on a Sunday morning and it was terrible. There were a few vintage clothes vendors, two or three antique vendors, and a few pretty good record/music vendors. The rest was chintz (cheap leather jackets, etc) or souvenir focused, basically the same stuff you find in the shops around town. What a disappointment. To be fair it was a bit rainy.

The Nieuwmarkt is a lovely building very close to the Bloemmarkt. It has some lovely towers and is easily accessible on foot from Dam Square. There are trams running from Centraal Station to the Amsterdam suburbs that pass it so you can see it from these if walking is not your thing.

I've always loved this small outdoor market where there is always a set up by some vendor selling something, hopefully food. It is on a small plaza sandwiched between a honky tonk area and some nice canal walks. Lots of people around, mostly locals.

Nieuwmarkt, a small neighborhood next to the notorious Red Light District, is the place of Amsterdam's Chinatown. It is a surprisingly neat area with some Chinese ethnic stores and restaurants. Close to a peaceful canal, the area is a pleasant place to spend some time. Unfortunately the square around the Waag is under construction.

Nieuwmarkt is a super place to go any day of the week. It is true that Saturday is one of the best days to go as a small farmer's market is there (the olives are very good although a bit pricey....I think it was 15,90EUR per kilo May 2016). However, if you want an incredible treat, stop by Tony Benson's Poffertjes kiosk.
A Poffertje is a very small pancake-like warmed treat with a very very slight hint of cinnamon. 10pcs for 2,50EUR is a great deal. Smothered in butter and confectioners sugar, and topped with a small Dutch flag and you'll want them daily. Tony also has crepes, made fresh (as are the Poffertjes), thin, and delicious. Granted, I've only had the crepe with Nutella, but he does have a number of other toppings/fillings. They are 3EUR each...,50 more for Nutella.
Tony is not there one day during the week (usually Tuesday or Wednesday). He has great conversation and greater food. If you go, tell him Laura and Dennis say hello and will be back to see him when we are next there.

The New Market square houses a small farmers market every Saturday ("Boerenmarkt") with organic food, delicious cheeses, herrings in a bun, fruit juices and more. Try timing a visit there on Saturday to enjoy it.
