The Munt Tower is within the centre of Amsterdam and is really close to the Bloemmarkt. It is close to the Nieuwmarkt and a short walk from Dam Square and Rembrandtplein in opposite directions.

I would definitely recommend getting to the tower close to and hour so you get to hear the peel of bells.

It takes about 20 minutes on foot from Central Station. It's not very expensive, but it's one of Amsterdam's landmarks. I couldn't go inside, but I liked the view from Bridge 222, which is a typical Amsterdam view.

The Munttoren, or Mint Tower is a former guard tower that used to be part of the old city's fortifications. It gets it's name from the house behind it, which used to be the building that minted coins in 17th Century Amsterdam. The most attractive feature of the tower is the carillon that still chimes every quarter of an hour.

Not really a must-see. See because it's a landmark more than anything else.

PROS
* A tower
* An Interesting historical structure
* A landmark for orientation and location
* Located at Amstel and Singel rivers
* Next to the floating flower market
* Adjacent to many tram lines
* In the center of a commercial tourist area with good food places and “coffeehouses”

CONS
* Nothing in there to see nor visit

“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because I walked past it many times, since it was near my lodging.

It was an orientation point in my wanderings, so that I knew that I was near the location.

ADVICES
It is certainly not a special place to visit and see, but you may walk past it.

Hendrick de Keyser, a renowned Dutch architect and sculptor, oversaw the building’s reconstruction and also attributed to the stylish eight sided top half of the Tower. Elegant additions of 4 clock faces and a carillon of bells were also made. Today the original bells are on display in the Amsterdam Historical Museum and replaced by newer ones. The Tower chimes ever quarter of an hour and on Saturdays between 2 and 3 pm one can hear a live concerto of the bells.

The Tower earned its peculiar name in the 17th century, when the Dutch were at war with England and France. With most of the Dutch territory occupied, the risk of losing valuable resources was high. A tower was used as a make shift center to mint money which is now known as the Mint Tower.

Built in the 17. century, today it is just an attraction. If you visit the flower market, you can not miss it - it is right at the end of it. It was used earlier to watch the ships.

Nice to see and visit if you are walking the streets of Amsterdam. If you are looking for a piece of real Delft porcelain to buy, there is plenty authentic, but of course pricey, pieces to be found in the shop inside the tower. Good, quality gifts to be found here.

This old building can be fully seen from the outside. It is adjacent to the Flower Market and many trams pass by. Inside is nothing special--retail space, so no need to go inside. A reminder of the Amsterdam of many years ago.

We came across this little old clock tower whilst wondering around. It was old and impressive and also a good landmark to figure out where we were.
