This is an amazing area to wander through. Lots of people - if you are into people watching. There are so many different shops. You can eat just about anything you can think of. The buildings around are so interesting - very well preserved and maintained. We stayed at Sunhead of 1617 - a B&B located on the canal. A... More

Beautiful walk especially at night after having a dinner. Some great benches to watch the activity of the canal boats.

Take lots of pictures and then visit the City Archives where you can buy a book detailing the history of every house on the street.

The 17th century place to live for the fashionable nouveau-riche of the time, the architecture is varied and interesting. It's boardered by small quiet streets and the occasional shop and bar, as all the principal canals are, but it seems calmer.

lots of activity, small restaurants (choose carefully, a lot of them are horrible), families and youths roaming the streets, very cool spot.

What's not to like in this city of canals! Do a canal tour to orient yourself, and then stroll along the canals, avoiding the cyclists. Pity the parked cars prevent you walking along the edge of the canal.

Great for a quick snack and coffee although the service can be a bit slow. Been several times and enjoy the atmosphere of sitting on the canal.

our hotel, rembrandt classic, was located on Herengracht Canal and we spent half an hour every evening sitting on its side, smoking a spliff, enjoying the amazing view and great smooth wind!

We spent a week in an apartment overlooking Herengracht at Herenstrasse, a virtual parade of insights to the daily life of Amsterdam's residents. From the party boats and tour boats on the canal (I highly recommend taking a canal tour), to seeing the inventiveness of what people transport on bicycles, this was a fascinating parade. The walk along this street,... More

Staying in Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)

Neighborhood Profile

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is as historically significant as it is perennially popular. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, shutterbug, or fashionista, odds are you’ll find the Amsterdam you're looking for while roaming around the Grachtengordel (Canal Ring). A brilliant place to get lost in a moody meander and a key component to any sightseeing trip to Amsterdam, this area's major draws include the Anne Frank House, the Bloemenmarkt floating flower market, an enviable assortment of independent boutiques along De Negen Straatjes, and of course all of Grachtengordel’s lovely canals and bridges.
