De Eilanden ( Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland en Realeneiland ) are three artificial islands that were constructed in the beginning of the 17th century as an expansion for the "Gouden Real" area ( a traditional indication for an area of the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands). From the beginning there were so many businesses in this area such as shipyard, storehouses for all the spices, grain or merchandise they brought from all part of the world. In the 70's this area were rediscoverd by a lot of artists and they began to settle down here. The islands had rich history. Nowadays the old store houses were transformed into luxury apartments, houses or offices. Today the day you still feel the atmosphere of the old glory of the past by seeing the old wooden lift bridges and the old façade walls with their gable stones. It's absolutely a nice are walking area.

There are several historical islands in town whereby many warehouses have been converted into apartments. De Eilanden near Java Brug is one of them and is near to Central Station. By strolling around the area, you can see some hints on the development of old warehouses in Amsterdam. There are also many boat houses along the canal as well.

We first saw this area while on a canal tour and I overheard some people talking about it so we decided to check it out for ourselves. I don’t know what they were talking about because we didn’t find much of anything here to write about. I don’t get why this is an attraction? There are way cooler things to do in Amsterdam. I do not recommend coming here if you are a tourist.

Walking past the Ship Museum (to your left) simply walk along Kattenburgerstraat until after say 10 mins walk, you get to JavaBrug. This bridge with great views and a pedestrian lane takes you over to Java island. An up & coming area as Amsterdam expands even promising a new, exclusive hotel by end 2017. Nice area to wander around but best with a guide book as some streets are pretty dull.

This area is pleasant to take a stroll, lots of plaques telling you the history of a building and of course the way the warehouses have been converted to housing but keeping in line with the village type street frontage, it is like being in a small village of its own.

The bridge itself is very popular due to its age and design.

I love these type things in Amsterdam, very nice small trails of ingenuity and design. This place is on the way to my friends house and it is a great walk or bike ride across the city!

These are a number of historic islands, not far from Central Station. Many canals, bridges, waterways - and historic buildings. The old warehouses have been converted to apartments, but have retained their authentic appearance.

You will find monuments, ship wharfs and a number of unique views and see-throughs in this area. Nice cafés and restaurants can be found here too.
