The area
Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Walking about in the Jordaan, my friend mentioned this Hofje because he used to live here. In the evening all is quiet and it looks very cosy. A small inner square, small houses. Like the architecture and ambiance.

Okay, so it’s a hof (courtyard) in Amsterdam. It’s just a courtyard that connects a few buildings to allow people in and out of their houses. Nothing photo worthy here; really, it’s just a courtyard for people to enter/exit their houses. If you happen to be walking down the street, have a look. But don’t go out of your way to find this place; it’s just not worth the effort.

This is a small and peaceful inner yard of a couple of residential buildings. At one corner is situated a nonfunctional water fountain with a lion's head decoration.

Quaint old couple of courtyards, Anslo's Hofje and Zwaarvegers Hofje together, presented as Claes Claeszoon's Hofje. Pretty little courtyard, a little bit neglected, ashtrays galore. Cool find though. Inconspicuous entrance. Kind of mysterious. Recommended.

Nice place to poke your head in if you happen to be passing - and notice it is there. We had a guide book or we would have walked past it. To be honest, not a lot to see but the plaque is very nice.

There are many hofjes (square) in amsterdam and Claes Claeszoon is one of them. Some hofjes are open for the public and some others not. Usually the location of a hof is difficult to find, with a small entrance that you will never notice it if you're not looking for it. This hofje is not really beautiful though it has deep history for the owner. It had been abandoned for a long time till in the '60 it was restorated by a foundation. It is not a 'must' as there are many other hofjes that you better visit.
