About
Operated by hydrofoils that used to serve the vast lakes in Russia, this is a great way to see Amsterdam's harbor. Traveling at 65kph on the way from the back of Central Station to Ijmuiden, you get to see just what a port city Amsterdam is. From the drop off point at Velsen a short bus ride will take you to the beach at Ijmuiden.

The area
Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

I would have recommended this as a day to most people, but today I went to check the time table and I have discovered that the service finished 01/01/14, a shame indeed

A few days ago my wife and I sailed from Newcastle to Ijmuiden en route to South-West Germany. In six hours we were able to visit Amsterdam to see the the Rijksmuseum Museum and the Van Gogh art Gallery thanks to the Fast Flying Ferry. From getting off the Newcastle car ferry at 10 am we were able to travel a few miles to the Fast ferry terminal north of Ijmuiden, get free parking and trav el along the canal to Amsterdam Central station, get a number 16 tram to the Rijksmuseum, see the exhibits, have lunch at the museum and then visit the Van Gogh Gallery in time to get a number 5 tram back to the central station in time for the 5 pm Fast ferry back to our car for onwards journey to Germany. All thanks to the availability of the Fast ferry, at 7 euros return per person - but it may close in 2014!

The dock for the Fast Ferry is easily accessed behind Centraal Station Amsterdam. We bought our tickets from the easily worked ticket machine on the dock, but discovered later that we also could have used our OV-chipkaart instead. Either way you pay, the ride is fast, the seats are clean, the windows are less clean if you want to take photos of the scenery speeding by, the ride smoother than I expected and the staff was pleasant - a very good way to get to IJmuiden and have more time on the beach!

The best connection between IJmuiden and Amsterdam ciry center has stopped services in 2014 due to lack of regular passengers..

Best connection now between ijmuiden and amsterdam is BUS 82.
This ll take you an hour though, whe the ferry did it in 15 minutes..

Sad..

My canal tour guide told me about this ferry ride, and I'm so glad he did!

As I recall, it was only about 8 euro for the ticket, which you can buy from an automated machine down by the docks on the backside of Amsterdam Centraal station.

You will find the boat at the far end of the docks. It leaves about every half hour.

What a wonderful way to see Amsterdam, the North Sea, and the beach area (I didn't know there were popular beaches in the Netherlands). It's a cool experience--the boat flies along at about 60 kph, and rises out of the sea on hydroplanes.

Roundtrip was about one hour, and highly recommended. A unique attraction that I consider a must in the 'Dam!

Fast, clean and cost effective way to transfer from the port of Ijmuiden to Amsterdam. Terminals at the central rail station so perfect for making transfers to trams, buses etc to visit other parts of the city.

Getting off the Newcastle ferry you've the choice between a taxi or the bus to get into Amsterdam . Or the Fast Flying Ferry . That's got to be the one to go for .It's a short walk to the bus stop , either up in the town ahead of you or a little further towards the prominent petrol station . Bus 74 will take you to the ferry terminal for about 1.7 Euros . I think the ferry was about 15 Euros for a family of four . It charges up the waterways towards the city , speeding past the oil tankers and tug boats and delivers you , leaving a trail of foam at 65 km per hour to Central Station to start your day in Amsterdam. Great fun .
