Nuns lived here practicing their religion in secret, as long as they paid the government a fee for the privilege! It's no longer a convent area, but one for single females to live. With a waitlist of 10 years! There's a catholic and a english...More

A nice park's hidden there, a church, a chapell, all surounded by houses of the single women. No tour available, just walking around in half of the complex (the next half was forbidden for tourists).

I managed to get to Begijnhof by mistake, as I was browsing some shops on a lateral street. This inner court has a special energy and will reboost your energy in the afternoon.

What a relief to step into this special place out of the Saturday morning tourists crowding the surrounding streets.

I looked forward to this quiet oasis but ..... The area was not well maintained and it was overcrowded with people and their dogs taking photographs. Signs were there asking people to not do both those things!

it's a bit of a walk but you can get there from the Centraal station on Damrak (under construction right now); walk over to Kalverstraat (runs parallel to Damrak) and watch for Spui and the alley-like Begijnenstraat that leads you to the arched entrance to...More

Pronounced shpow, the Spui square has lots to offer including the Begijnhof, a place for elderly ladies to live, so be respectful when visiting...very quiet greenspace with a couple of churches, I think, and some photo ops---just try and keep the noise down, because these...More

Begijnhof is a lovely area just off the main shopping strip. Well worth a stop off, lovely place to see in the summer in its full glory

Through a hidden doorway and you are in a tranquil square away from the hustle of the city. A great place to sit for a while, admire the buildings and enjoy a moment's peace.

A great place to step out of the loud and noisy intersection just beyond the entryway into this wonderful little square. Enjoy the old churches and the quiet. What a beautiful retreat that they still share with the public.

I believe that it is owned by their religious order. and it functions as a retirement facility for older women of that order. I gather they are slowly passing and there are no replacements.

It's too soon to say exact times for Easter but apparently the High Mass is at 12.15 and is held partly in English. Walking time is approximately 10 minutes from your hotel.
