This beautiful zoo is a paradise for humans as well as animals! Two afternoons were not enough to enjoy all it has to offer! As an older visitor, with knee problems, my folding seat/cane was invaluable! Hope to return someday! Ask in advance to speak with a docent about the role of the zoo in hiding Jews during WW2.

Went there as been meaning to go for ages, and was not impressed. They've done a good job, and they are constantly improving, with some bits great (like being in with the monkeys etc. and decent aquarium) however some of it was quite depressing being a city centre zoo with very small dingy Victorian style cages for some of the... Definitely worth a visit! Great zoo, with a huge variety of animals right in the centre of the city, busy at times but big enough to wander round at your own pace!

This is a massive zoo, with a wide variety of animals. It also has a very large play area for children... with plenty of things to climb and slide down. It also has one or two smaller play areas dotted around. The food is good as well... with children's portions and a wide choice. We easily spent the whole day... More

My boyfriend and I visited the zoo on a rainy afternoon in September but it was such a wonderful day nonetheless. The zoo is very open plan and you can get really close to the animals which is a really cool experience. I would definitely go back and recommend!

We really enjoyed this! Its so clean and spacious and the animals really appear to be healthy! It has animals to suit everyone - we had the I Amsterdam card so had free entry and got to skip the queue so that was brilliant

We loved this zoo. Our only complaint was that we didn't plan enough time to thoroughly enjoy it. It is right across the street from the Dutch Resistance Museum so we thought we could just pop in. Its beautiful and the animals are wonderful to see. We will go back and spend more time at this lovely zoo.

Biked to the zoo from our hotel. It is a great zoo with lots of exhibits to see. Advise to get there earlier in the day as it gets busy later on.

O visited the Artis Zoo with my son, while staying for a few days in Amsterdam and it was really interesting. The diversity of the animals, birds, reptilians and insects collection is impressive. You can see pretty much anything from Mexican tarantulas and stick insects to penguins, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and even a Komodo dragon. This is definitely a... More

We were only in Amsterdam for the day and after giving up on Anne Frank's House due to the huge queue, we browsed through our Lonely Planet book while eating pancakes and decided to give this place a go. Walked there - but had we planned better we could have got the tram - and it was tricky to find... More

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
