The zoo here has reached it's peak, as it's in a city, they have no more room to expand at all. The pending elephant enclosure has taken the last bit of land they could have had. There are no tigers, hippos, rhinos or bears. The lion enclosure is the smallest I've ever seen in my life. There is just no... More

One of my favourite zoos in the world, there's something about Artis, it feels like stepping back in time, and is truly one of the most relaxing places ever! I was really disappointed to find that the taxidermy collection has now completely disappeared, but I guess this is a sign of the times.

A lovely day out for all with great amenities and a grand cafeteria too - planetarium, microscopic feature and creative displays

I do not do zoos but after being dragged to this zoo by my daughter, I absolutely thought it was top notch. The main reason being that animals live in habitats and not cages! Great experience

This zoo is quite old and consequently some of the cages are smaller than in modern zoos. However, they're working on this as you can see for example with the new elephant enclosure being built (2017). The lemur area is great where they roam fairly freely. The 1882 aquarium building is a sight to behold. Very impressive, as are the... More

The zoo was a great day out but there is nothing there that you can't see when you visit any other zoo in Europe.

It's a small zoo but provided a welcome change of pace for our little travel companion who drew a lot of appreciative chuckles from nearby parents when asking "Why is the lion in captivity?" and answered by a practical Dutch woman who was standing nearby and answered, "He's a very old lion who has nowhere else to live." There's also... More

I always struggle visiting zoos, being such an animal lover it stresses me to see them locked up. This zoo was fairly spacious and open for the animals. Seeing the wolves was incredible as they where howling at one another and I got quite emotional witnessing that. I just wish they had a bigger enclosure. Staff all really friendly!

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
