Nice zoo

We decide to visit this zoo even if weren't going there. It was worth it. Really nice place to see either with a family or with friends.

We found this old zoo as we came off a tram looking for the brilliant Resistance Museum. We learned there were 750 types of animal to see along with a stunning aquarium and planetarium. The scary inhabitants like crocs, sharks, vultures have quite an impact but It was great to see giraffes, elephants, zebras, chimps, orangutans, camels and the lovable penguins like Edinburgh Zoo.In the summer there is music... We visited on one of the special late opening Saturdays this summer, and were amazed! A well kept zoo, amazing atmosphere, beautiful animals (and a wide range of them too!) and friendly staff meant a really wonderful visit. The gardens were gorgeous and we only wish we'd had more time to see absolutely everything, and visit the planetarium. Those with... More

Who doesn't like a zoo, especially when you've got kids? You can spend most of a day here and the kids will love it.

The zoo was immaculate - great range of animals and they all looked so well after. We were surprised at how large the zoo was, given it is quite close to residential areas. Highly recommended - a great day out for all the family as there is so much to see. The Butterfly area had so many varieties. p.s. don't... More

I am not sure about zoo's usually. I always feel sorry for the animals being cooped up in confined spaces but the animals at Artis were all kept in excellent conditions and looked as if they were being cared for really well. The zoo itself is very pretty and we spent approximately 5 hours walking around and looking at the... More

My 12 year old son and I loved this zoo. Lots of variety and appears to be well kept and animals appear to have good enclosures. Aquarium part was beautiful.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
