About
Explore how sex has evolved throughout history at this museum with its extensive collection of explicit paintings, pictures, recordings, and artifacts. The exhibits detail over 100 years’ worth of sensual love from all the cultures of the world. Some pieces will make you laugh, while others are more thought-provoking. The museum, which opened in 1985, is the oldest of its kind still in operation. It’s located at the Damrak waterfront, one of the most vibrant areas in downtown Amsterdam. When you’re done touring the exhibits, grab a beer or a snack, or enjoy a canal cruise. – Tripadvisor

    Very bizarre experience
We thought we’d come here while in Amsterdam to kill some time looking around. It was about €10 per person which isn’t extreme It was a very random experience looking at all photos and models through the years, spent probably around an hour or so here. It gets a little busy around midday when we arrived. Not wheelchair friendly as there are a lot of stairs to gain access to other floors If you’re in Amsterdam it’s something to do if you have time on your hands

Blonde haired women on entrance is rude af and is the reason why it doesnt get 5/5
For €10 its well priced. The toilets are something to be seen a quote from my friend "the most impeccable toilets iv seen in Amsterdam" lots of interesting photos. Very amusing. Alot of stairs and staff are rude and miserable. But worth a visit

    Inexpensive Time Killer
We attended the museum to kill time between a meal and another planned trip. It was overall ok with some interesting exhibits and some really bad (old and unrealistic) mechanical displays. The overall impression was that sex and pornography has interested various world cultures throughout history. There was a separate exhibition for LGBTQ++ rights which was great to see and also interesting Entrance was 10 euros each which I felt fair.

    Shady sex experience
Visited this as part of our Amsterdam trip in February. Obviously we all know the story with Amsterdam and its links to the sex industry, drugs and whatever craziness it presents so therefore this was a must visit for us. The museum itself has this sort of “shadiness” feeling about it as you enter, being met by some smartly dressed hosts. When you enter you’re immediately met by various statues, images and a couple of electronic animations of a man being relieved in a toilet and also another man who opens his coat and surprises you. I think the whole point of the museum is to introduce you to the world of sex, the history behind it etc yet i felt this was just full of pornographic images from the 1910s all the way through to current day and also a small exhibition on historic condoms and other contraception. For the entry of ten euros per person it isn’t the worst, but when it’s done i don’t think i would make it a priority to return.

    A quick hour stop
We popped in here upon passing it on our way into Amsterdam and thought "Why not". It is what it says on the tin, we had a good laugh here and there was a lot to see, but just know it is not very accessible at all, with a lot of very narrow staircases. It killed an hour for 20 euros each so you can't complain too much, but it's definitely a see once-and-done kind of place.

    Interesting visit.
I think this is one of those must see things in Amsterdam, it's quirky a bit of fun and not to be taken too seriously. It won't pass anymore than an hour or so and I suppose for that reason the €10 entrance is a little expensive. There's actually quite a bit to see though, and I supposed the amount of time you can spend there depends how much in detail you are reading the items watching videos evt. It is entertaining, I'd say it's worth a visit but I wouldn't go again. It can get busy at times.

    Bit tacky.
What do you expect for a sex museum- hard to say! We felt it was a bit tacky to be honest and once you have seen one 1950’s porn picture you’ve seen 100’s! Wouldn’t feel the need to go back. Was a bit underwhelming. The giant phalus’s upstairs make for a fun group photo.

    Something to do
We were at the Sexmuseum Amsterdam in June. This was not a highlight of things to do while in Amsterdam but we were in this area so we said why not. The museums exhibits are dated and could be working better but again, we were in this area and, the Sexmuseum was something to do. It took a little over a hour to go through. The layout of the museum isn’t the greatest if there are many people walking around looking at the same exhibits you are trying to view but again, this was just something to do considering Amsterdam is know for the “Red Light District”.

Sexmuseum Amsterdam Venustempel - 27/06/2024 An interesting experience... It is a fairly central part of the city (At least to me, I walked past it a few times). One of those places I walked into for the fun of it. A good laugh with people.

I have bought tickets for 4 of my friends through the website but for some reason I was charged for 8 people. Immediately I rang the number on the website, I was told to go back to the website and find an email as they can’t help and was hung up on. Then, I emailed both emails on the website and received no reply. I informed the staff upon entry to museum who just advised to email the email found on website. I have still not received any support.

Worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life.

Booked online and less than 10 hours later received a positive covid test, emailed straight away and asked to change to just 1 week later. Days go by and I hear nothing, so I call up and I’m told to email again. A further 3 days go by and I’ve still heard nothing, so I call again. I am told the owner will email me. Still nothing. I call again and receive a rude response that states they cannot suffer any financial losses and will not do anything. This isn’t a financial loss, because I’m not there, this should be so straight forward, like every other attraction in Amsterdam (who have been more than happy to change our bookings and have been super lovely!).

I get email responses from the ‘owner’ asking me not to harass them and calling me a ‘Karen’!!!!

Honestly, I should’ve read the reviews on here before booking. It looks terrible anyway, but you give the benefit of the doubt of it being a laugh. Poor customer service on top just makes this place absolute laughing stock. Go literally anywhere else in Amsterdam but here as they have the manners of a toddler.

I enjoyed this museum more than I thought than I would based on the mixed reviews. It is not very expensive for a museum on one of the main sightseeing streets (€9). It's a bit cheesy but a good laugh if you go in with an open mind and has some nice historical bits too. All in all a good laugh and definitely an Amsterdam must visit.

90% of the museum consists of pictures. Old, low quality pictures. Surely it must be possible to make this more interesting and appealing. Add a basic timeline, add video's, cover recent developments like internet, 3D, and so on.

All in all it felt a bit like a tourist trap for drunk tourists who want have a laugh. Not recommended.

We were recommended to visit by our friends, and it was definitely worth it. We found it funny, strangely informative and just a good laugh. You take yourself round, the layout is quite logical, and the only staff are on the main entrance/exit. I can see why some people would not enjoy it, but just go in open minded and be prepared to be a bit taken back. It doesn't try to pretend to be the kind of museum where you'll see age old artefacts and listen to knowledgeable tour guides, so don't expect it to be like that which some of the other reviews seem to have done.

Great attraction, definitely worth the money!
This is my boyfriend and I's first trip to Amsterdam and were recommended to visit this museum by a friend, so we checked it out. Packed with loads of information and history with fun picture opportunities well worth 9 Euros each. No problems whatsoever!!!

A terrible and unfriendly experience and would not recommend.

When entering we were told to go to the top of the 4 floors and work our way down which we did. We were then told while looking on the 3rd floor (by the woman who had only 10 minutes earlier taken my money at the entrance) to leave as she wanted to close the floor and that we should have worked our way down!!

We noted that we were working our way down and were looking at the exhibits, to which she told us that we had not and we had gone up!! She was extremely rude and then followed us jangling her keys and others down each floor trying to look at the exhibits so she could close each floor and leave early.

I would not recommend as was a horrid experience and a shame that we were not given any time to look at anything as we were pushed through the museum. If they wanted to close early they should not have admitted us and taken out money.

An interesting at at times, highly amusing experience. Lots of historical exhibits and many photos.

Definitely not for children !

Visited with my sister and 91 year-old mother who coped admirably with the numerous steep staircases and all agreed it was good entertainment, and a good way to escape the unseasonably cold and windy April weather at reasonable cost.

Seen a few reviews online that say this is a "must see". Honestly have no idea how anyone can think this is worth bothering with, €9 and takes around 20 mins to get around?
A collection of unorganised tat and 130-150 year old pornographic pictures with absolutely no context or background on why it's there. Really disappointed
