The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

I think its one of the most underrated museum of Amsterdam. Its not really touristed compare to other museum but defintely of the finest museum amsterdam has to offer. I recommend to check it out if you visiting Amsterdam.

The building itself is spectacular and I just really like the atmosphere and stuff from our former colonies.

I double checked if I entered to the same museum as other reviewers.... It is one of the most boring museums I have ever been at. We went out after 30 minutes.

We went just for the Escher exhibition and were amazed at the rest of this museum. Fascinating for all ages and cultures. A lot of thought has gone into the presentation of each gallery such as lighting and layout. Floor staff very welcoming, helpful and...More

What a mag-ni-fi-cent museum! It's super inter-active, fully social-media connected (scan your face onto a beautiful African tribal hairdo and send it off or send e-cards at your heart's content :). You can lie on a bunch of lush pillows watching and listening (get the...More

The Tropenmuseum is a fascinating museum of cultures all over the world, not just the cultures of former Dutch colonies. There are great displays, for both adults and children, and it well worth visiting after hitting the usual top tourists spots, especially if you are...More

It's a big museum. with much to see, and it definitely needs time on your part to be able to fully enjoy it. A toddler rarely stays quiet for long and cannot yet really enjoy a museum yet, any museum... So I would say, if... More
