- emmaAmsterdam, The Netherlands130 contributionsFinally we are talking about itI visited the Wereldmuseum on a school trip the other week … obtained terrible museum fatigue in the process but the exhibit we saw was very informative of the masked history of the Netherlands. This has been a certain point of frustration for me during my time in Amsterdam. The complete lack of discussion of colonization and imperialism imbedded within Dutch history is seldom talked about. I appreciated the Wereldmuseum for this.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 10, 2024

This was supposed to be a museum about countries where like Indonesia, where Netherlands had colonies. The part about Indonesia is interesting BUT they dedicate a big part of the museum to make an (insulting for many people) propaganda about "genderless"views and life, trying to convince people that gender is "fluid" and showing for example a video where parents say that their son, sometimes is a girl, sometimes a boy and sometimes a cat!!!!!!! What has this to do with a "museum of the tropics"????? People pay a very expensive ticket and they are supposed to see more about countries where Nethelands had colonies. They not only put irrelevant subjects in, but also promote views that many people find embarrasing and insulting. If we knew that there are so many irrelevant subjects we would not have paid to enter. Our worst experience in Netherlands. They should focus on translating some information about life in colonial Indonesia, that they write only in dutch and not in english, in the part where they have the wax figures.

It’s a beautiful museum for sure. However my two star rating is due to booking a master class to design your own face mask and execution of social distancing rules at museum. Both score poor.
Idea to design your own mask is great, execution poor. The mask doesn’t fit properly, you have to sew the strings yourself which is time consuming and ugly options ( left over fabrics which are not comfortable wearing behind ears).
Museum advertises on website about maintaining corona rules etc however none(!) of staff asked visitors to social distance when they clearly didn’t. No one wears face masks. And staff of masterclass even asked audience to sit on stairs while they discussed explaining workshop! After they asked people to look at mannequins who were wearing face masks which caused people to gather up again close. We were floored by this! We decided to visit because they advertise about Coronavirus rules and safety. They failed. Big time. So please be aware before you schedule a visit so you can make a conscious decision about going or not.

It's December and by law, facemasks should be worn inside. At the front desk, two security guards are sitting with their noses fully out of their masks, negating the purpose of the mask entirely. Off to a bad start. The exhibits at the museum need some attention -- not all the buttons work, etc. The old wax dummies representing figures from the colonial past is also a massively outdated display. As the café is closed for to corona, we brought snacks for our little ones and were shown to a room where we could eat. A few minutes later, a security guard enters with a broom and dustpan, "here, you can use it" she says (note the lack of "please" or "thank you"), and leaves. We are all pretty shocked, after paying 16 Euros a ticket, to be handed a broom. Judging by the lack of love shown to the exhibits, maybe they don't have enough staff? Still... We dutifully swept up the crumbs our children dropped. I have never experienced anything so strangely inhospitable.

I last visited this museum 10 years ago and was shocked by the renovation. The previous museum was fascinating— extensive cultural exhibits on Indonesia, Suriname and Ghana, with appropriate acknowledgment of the impact of Dutch colonialism. It took 2-3 hours to see the whole museum and it was worth the detour since it’s a bit of the beaten track. But now it has been transformed into a shadow of its former self. I understand the Dutch are embarrassed by their former colonial past but now most of the cultural artifacts are gone and have been replaced by exhibits on the horrors of colonialism. The displays are poorly lit and hard to follow. There is so little to see that it takes less than 45 minutes to visit— making it hardly worth the admission price. Scratch this off your list unless you find yourself nearby and it’s pouring rain.

I only went because they had a free admission day and I had a small window of time that made this museum a feasible option. At one point, I think the museum was supposed to examine the Dutch history of colonialism. That’s a topic that sorely needs more public accountability. However, this museum seems to have morphed into a general catchall about countries in the tropics…? I’m not sure what the museum’s agenda is any more. The exhibits made no sense to me.

This was one of the worst and most disappointing museums I have been to in over 40 years of travel. It was NOT as advertised and it was expensive, but there wasn’t much to see. It was supposed to be about the tropical areas where the Dutch had been active (i.e., the Dutch East India company). Once inside, we discovered it was supposed to be about understanding different cultures, but it was a loose unlinked collection of a few artifacts and random photos from a few different countries. Give this one a miss.

I want to like the Trop but it just didn't do it for me. Half the museum was closed for renovations during my visit and the other exhibits were lackluster compared to the other museums I visited in Amsterdam. If you have the I Amsterdam card, the Trop is worth a visit because of the building neat architecture but I wouldn't exactly make a stop a priority if you are short on time.

Museum of the colonial history of the Netherlands. Extremely bad experience. A shame of a museum €17.50 entry and you will leave this place without any additional information. A non-functional QR Code system (for audio comments). No brochures. No info. No story to understand the history of the Netherlands.
Normally a museum with 2 reading levels: 1 quick so that visitors get the essentials in 30/40 minutes and 1 exhaustive to take in and understand all the details of the place.
Nothing of that here, you wander from room to room without understanding anything. There are screens with videos everywhere but without interest to capture the visitor's attention. Overpriced for what it is. Unlike the Routard guide which notes a particularly popular place, for me it is 0.

Totally suprised me in the best way possible. Very active and interesting exhibition, and the building alone is aelbsolutly breathtaking.
Would recommend it to anyone, also very good for children because there are many interactive games.
Can be visited for dutch and english speakers.
Loved it!!!

Temporary exhibitions were interesting, but permanent ones were dull.
The game of drawing arabic calligraphy was such a small part of the museum but I enjoyed it so much and it was so well done, it made my day.
Big part of the museum is devoted to dutch colonization, but I'm not informed about the history of it and it feels like it fails to tell the story from perspective of the past.
It often feels that people making it don't want to invite you to think on complicated subject but only to show their opinion on it that they think is the only right.

Hello
What is the size of the museum?
Thanks
Written September 24, 2019
It is quite manageable. There are three floors but because of the large open area in the middle of the building, the upper floors are just a circle around the edge of the building. But at the same time, it doesn't feel small. The exhibits are robust, high quality, and filled with information.

There is a special children's section which I love even better than the rest of the museum!

It's a big museum. with much to see, and it definitely needs time on your part to be able to fully enjoy it. A toddler rarely stays quiet for long and cannot yet really enjoy a museum yet, any museum... So I would say, if this will be your only chance for a long time to visit the Tropenmuseum, you might give it as quick a chance as possible even so. But if that is not the case, then maybe you better wait for your little one to be more able to enjoy the visit with you...
