This regional boutique shopping area affords pleasant walks in a slightly-quieter part of the touristy part of central Amsterdam. It will still be full of tourists, but feel calmer because of the boutique arrangement. The majority of the shops are for women's clothing, and most are northern European styles and brands, in a somewhat minimalist, functional sort-of look.

Once these nine streets had nice, unique little shops with very different products to offer. Then the tourist masses came and the rents went up. Finally only exclusive shops belonging to chains could survive, but the old atmosphere has gone unfortunately.

Loads of fun shops, good bars and a cosy atmosphere. Good for a relaxed stroll and then settle in one of bars.

Amsterdam is a shopping paradise and refreshingly free of the usual chain-stores and multi-nationals. Small boutique shops are the order of the day and the Nine Streets (and surrounding cross-canal streets) are full of them, selling everything in the not necessary to have, but must have all the same, categories. Throw in a great selection of bars and cafe pit-stops... More

We walked each street and were somewhat underwhelmed at the number of boutiques on the streets. There are virtually none facing canals so you should concentrate on the cross streets for your shopping.

De Negen Straatjes or Nine Streets is a must see in Amsterdam. Nine very quaint, very beautiful streets packed full of interesting shops, trendy boutiques and great places to eat or sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere. Be warned it does get busy on a Saturday, but an evening stroll through these streets is lovely, especially with their intersecting canals.... More

De negen straatjes (nine streets) is a shopping area that only has small shops, mostly owned by the same people that you find inside. The focus is on clothing, but you can also find artisan and other items there.

Staying in Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)

Neighborhood Profile
Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is as historically significant as it is perennially popular. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, shutterbug, or fashionista, odds are you’ll find the Amsterdam you're looking for while roaming around the Grachtengordel (Canal Ring). A brilliant place to get lost in a moody meander and a key component to any sightseeing trip to Amsterdam, this area's major draws include the Anne Frank House, the Bloemenmarkt floating flower market, an enviable assortment of independent boutiques along De Negen Straatjes, and of course all of Grachtengordel’s lovely canals and bridges.
