Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Very nice visit. Good facilities and pretty well explained. Wardrobe room is very good with loads of lockers. Give yourself a couple of hours (between 2-3 hours) to visit properly all bridges and the ship outside.
The audio tour devices are handy and more than enough to have proper explanations.
Friendly staff.
100% recommended.

Some fantastic artifacts and ship decorations are displayed.
Royal barge was very impressive. Replica ship is also very nice and has a feel to it.
However the layout is complicated, map supplied at the entrance is far from being efficient. We almost missed the best artifacts and left while trying to figure out what is where.

The museum contain pieces on a few different topics, but not very detailed or informative.
A little small and the exhibits missing a storyline or background information.

Great museum with excellent information and exhibits. Touring the Amsterdam replica ship is worth the price of admission alone!

I purchased 2 tickets on line via trip advisor and then could not enter the museum as the tickets could not be downloaded. I went round and round trying to do it at the entrance until the museum manager tried to help and he could not do it either. He eventually e mailed the confirmation page to himself and let my wife and I in as he could see I had paid the 33 euros. So what o don’t understand is why trip advisor makes it so hard to download the tickets. It really SUCKS !

On my most recent visit (Nov. 2020), the photo exhibition called "Rising Tides" was phenomenal, even though somewhat haunting. It was also quite reassuring that the museum and its staff were very "Covid ready", and we were never worried for our health/security during our approx 2.5 hour visit.
On previous visits over the past years, I (and guests visiting me/Amsterdam) also very much enjoyed Whale tale room, the maps, the model ships, the VR experience and, of course, the model ships room. And the beautiful, historic building itself is something to behold, not to mention it's high calibre cafe and gift shop.
Finally, it's such a wonderful paradox in which to be immersed when you're visiting a museum concerned with (any kind of) history, yet which presents it very accessibly, interactively and (sometimes) digitally, key to 21st century museum visits - and this one does that in an exemplary manner!!

The building of the museum is an old colonial warehouse, and makes it already worthwhile to visit this museum. The exhibition is worth seeing.

As a shipping enthusiast I was really looking forward to this visit but was very disappointed.

The key display was a three-masted vessel moored alongside but it was not open to the public. The building itself is fabulous and there was a fair selection of maritime paintings and the 'royal barge' was OK.

Apart from that there was a dumbed-down display about whales that might have been OK for children and a great deal of empty space.

This museum needs a re-think.
