Just got back from my fourth trip to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, my favorite museum in the world. As Bill Nighy's character in Dr. Who notes, Van Gogh is the only painter who could show the beauty of life through its pain. His self-portraits, of which there are a few at the museum, are frighteningly honest. The world... More

Within the museum we had the opportunity to visit an exhibition about the sex business culture in Amsterdam and how it all began. This is optional, but why not make the most of it. This attraction was accessed as part of the Amsterdam card. The best part for me was reading the stories behind each painting. This gave me a... More

We foolishly did not buy tickets ahead online and had to wait in line for tickets on a hot and sunny summer day, but it was worth the wait! I had been to the museum many, many years ago and was surprised by all of the additions! It included work by his famous artists friends, people whose art was inspired... More

Enjoyable tour. We got the audio guide (had to replace one of them twice). We bought tickets in advance for the first tour, it was not yet so croweded.

There is more Van Gogh here then anywhere in the world. This is a must see, just be prepared for the long line to get the tickets. But as we found out. This was well worth the wait.

We waited a bit in line and I thought the price was a bit high but the museum was really well done. The special exhibit on Van Goghs life and mental illness was really fascinating. It was overall really great even for someone who doesn't love love love art.

Spend the 5e to get the electronic guided tour. It makes the visit so much better. We were fortunate to see the special exhibit "on the verge of insanity" - really educational. A must see when visiting Amsterdam

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighborhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
