This museum gives you a great look into the history of Amsterdam (close to 1,000 years old), and its meaning to the world. Their website says: "Home to Johan Cruijff, Rembrandt, Ajax, the Red Light District, the Dutch East India Company and marijuana." But there is so much more. The building itself is a heritage edifice, in the very center... More

I visited Amsterdam museum in August with my partner. It was one of the first things we did in Amsterdam and its ticket was included in my I Amsterdam card. If was a compact, comprehensive historical journey through Amsterdam's history! It was not tiring with too much detail and information whilst it's many interactive exhibits made it an experience! Good... More

We entered the museum as we had bought the i@Amsterdam card and we needed a break from the rainy weather. The museum provides lockers, clean facilities with staff looking bit tired of the tourist influx. It contains a lot of interesting info the social history of the city as well as paintings and impressive globe maps.

We found this restaurant, courtyard and museum quite by chance, we had lunch there on a beautiful sunny day in the courtyard which was part of the old orphanage. We found the museum really interesting lots of information through headphones, really would recommend it,

If you are travel to Amsterdam to see the city and its museums, this is the first museum you should see. After you visit Rijksmuseum (National Museum), all other museums will disappoint you. I made this mistake.

If you need your knowledge of Amsterdam to be supplemented (significantly if you are like me) head here. Great displays with commentary that provides plenty of information. A really enjoyable experience. Educational and interesting. Get the audio guide-worth the extra.

I'm not sure it's worth the price they charge, as there is very little to look at in this museum. I still found quite interesting the way they presented the evolution of the city. It's not a classic museum with historic or artistic pieces to admire but more of a pavilion with movies, audios on visuals.

Very interesting insight into Amsterdam. If you enjoy history & historical artefacts, then the Amsterdam museum will not disappoint. Good value at 1 1/2 to 2 hours for a visit.

There is a lot to learn here if you are interested in the history of Amsterdam. Our only regret was that we arrived at 2 and they close at 5 and we missed probably 2/3 of the museum! Need to allow lots of time in order to take it all in. Since most things were in the Netherland language we... More

The initial part of the museum has great tech that provides explanations of exhibits in "your" preferred language. The museum gives a very good and understandable history of Amsterdam. It was a great way to begin our visit.

Staying in Centrum

Neighborhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
