called on one afternoon as we were walking past, seemed fairly busy, so we sat outside in the sun, service was quick, asked for a dark beer, we were informed that they only sold Amstel, we only had one beer and left, not a bad place to stop off for a beer.

Beer, Bitterballe and lots of Dutchies. It's the oldest pub in Amsterdam so you owe yourself a beer there.

With some luck you might spot a Dutch celebrity. Cozy atmosphere, good service, authentic brown cafe atmosphere.

Enjoyed a great sandwich and beer here. Excellent service. Cosy indoors too though we sat in the conservatory part late in the afternoon.

Stumbled in quite by accident. It's the busiest bar around, but getting served was no problem. It's split into two unequal parts; a larger 'newer' bar, and a smaller older bar. A cracking atmosphere, a quality 'brown cafe' of Amsterdam, with plenty of beer choices for those that like that kind of thing. 'Bitterballen' was witnessed, but not tried. Gents... More

Good and friendly atmosphere. Visited by lots of locals. Good choice of drinks. Try dutch gin, called jenever or just a beer.

We only stumbled across cafe Hoppe and decided to go in for a well earned rest. The staff were delightful and the fruit beer is well worth a try. It's a great place to sit and people watch. We had 2 young teenagers with us who enjoyed the hot chocolate, it's worth finding this place and you have to go... More

Dating all the way back to 1670, apparently originally as a jenever distillery and a listed building, it's a classic stop for a beer and/or a snack. Inside has the older feel; outside is good for people watching with the clang of the trams being the only noise.

Staying in Centrum

Neighborhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
