The cafe has a great outdoor seating area that is right in the sun, also good for people watching as there is a lot going on around the area. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. We also ordered some bar snacks which were really good and the portions did not disappoint!

We were just washed into this cafe by a heavy rain and decided to sit it out there, enjoying some beers and some bitterballen, so nothing too fancy but nice all along. Friendly staff and a nice selection of beers, so it was all I could expect in that regard. A bit too cramped and thus too loud to feel fully comfortable though.

Saw a recommendation to try this so called 'brown bar' and wasn't disappointed. Lovely old pub, sawdust on the floor, all coloured brown inside apparently from the days smoking was allowed inside.

Great range of beers. I enjoyed the winter only Amstel Bokbeer. Missus had a Chardonnay.

At 5 they clear the tables away to make room for the masses of Dutch who must come in straight after work, although it was a Friday. The pub just has that vibe any good pub should have of people happily chatting away. No need for music here.

A further peculiarity of this place is next door is interconnected and you can walk through to it by going behind the bar and through the barman's passage.

Finally we can recommend trying the bar snacks. We had the Bitterballen which come as 8 breaded balls filled with a delicious meat stew.

We stopped in to see this historic old bar during a hot afternoon when nobody else was in there. Drank a beer and took some photos of the cool old barrels behind the bar. We didn't have any of the service problems that others have mentioned (and that we definitely experienced elsewhere in Amsterdam) - could be because we were there during a very slow time of the day.

Absolutely appalling customer service. Total disregard to myself and partner - more interested in their friends and regulars outside....far, far better places surrounding this establishment to drink and enjoy. Avoid AT ALL COSTS.

I only drop in here occasionally when in Amsterdam and always wonder why I don't more often. Yes it is definitely for locals however I have always been made welcome. Even yesterday they engaged in conversation when they didn't need to and it wasn't forced - just a friendly team
I will definitely get here more often

Hoppe is packed every night at happy hour and it seems like only with happy people. The place buzzes( and smells of liquor, cigarette smoke and at least a hundered years of dust)
We tried one of their special Dutch gin mixes, the one with the weirdest name and it was great! However we let it be followed by a good old Heineken.

We had a good time looking at the people who frequent the place and I may add frequently. The interior is very attractive and it is fun to realize so many Dutchmen and tourists have been there before you.

Be sure to order some bitterballen, yummy deep fried balls of meat and meal with spices, that one pricks on a toothpick and dips in some hot Dutch mustard before savouring(test for temperature because they can be burning hot).

Hoppe is a place you'll go back to, garanteed.

Friends
My friend and I wanted to visit a typical "Brown Cafe" when in Amsterdam. According to our research, "Brown cafes are to Amsterdam what pubs are to London. That is, they are casual, neighborhood gathering spots located all around the city, featuring dark wood and people looking for a drink, a snack and friendly conversation." We found all of those things at Cafe Hoppe. The atmosphere was perfect and the bartender was fun and friendly. We met a nice Dutch couple there, and we chatted over Dutch beers as they gave us tourism and restaurant tips. We also sampled a local specialty - bitterballen. Our tour guide described it as "fried mystery meat," but to me, it seemed more like deep fried balls of creamy gravy (like the gravy poured over biscuits and gravy in the deep south of the U.S.). While the snack was a bit heavy and heart-clogging for my tastes, I appreciated the fact that Cafe Hoppe made a perfectly-executed bitterballen. They were piping hot when they came to our table, the outside was crispy, and the inside was creamy and flavorful. If you're looking for an authentic, laid-back Amsterdam experience, Cafe Hoppe is an absolute must!

Cafe Hoppe, on the Spui, is a "bruincafe", a "brown cafe", so-called for the color of the decor and (supposedly) the nicotine-stained quality of the walls inside. Smoking's not permitted inside restaurants here any more—although you can still smoke at the sidewalk tables when the weather permits—but Cafe Hoppe retains the sense of a traditional Nederlander cafe.

Try the assorted warm and cold appetizers, including bitterballen, cheese straws, aged Gouda cheese, liverwurst, raw beef sausage (my favorite!), and other authentic Dutch pub-food-style treats, with a nice glass of Palm beer. One of my favorite places in Amsterdam, I stop in here on every trip.

Yes Hoppe used to ve a fun place to go to. I remember my university days all to well . Hoppe was a nice meeting spot. Nowerdays its a but different really. Its not as busy as before. Having said that, i was there a few weeks ago on a saterday and it was packed. Brought back memories. My advice is, if you want a bitof history and a nice olace to drink, have a look at Hoppe and give it a try.
