Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

    Amazing pie!
Absolutely loved this place! Had a great atmosphere and some lovely pie! We sat at the counter but there were plenty of other seats available and the service was quick. The apple pie is a must - it was gorgeous and gets served with a generous amount of cream on the side.

    Authentic, traditional Dutch Cafe
A lovely example of a Dutch “brown cafe” renowned for their cozyness. With dark brown walls and furniture , soft light and beautiful Delft plates and tiles. A great place to rest your feet and enjoy a drink and apple pie (beware very large portions).

Top class apple pie; great historical building
This is a great place to visit in Amsterdam. The building dates from the 1600’s and retains all of its character and charm inside. There is also plenty of outdoor seating. The apple pie with whipped cream was just incredible and the coffees were also very good.

I've lived in Amsterdam for some years and on this occasion I brought visitors here for a beer and a bite to eat. We didn't end up eating due to how rude the person serving us was. We were not made to feel welcome, were spoken to badly and he even shook his head when we asked for more time because what we wanted wasn't on the menu. I wouldn't return and would certainly not reccomend to all my tourist friends who come to visit un future

Beautiful cafe - great range of options for beers, lunches, traditional Dutch options. Incredible views over the canal in one of the most serene areas of the city.

Two other cafes are nearby so even if it’s full there are options to go to.

Definitely recommend!

My husband found this little gem in our travel guide and we visited for a hot drink and some Dutch Apple Pie. Wow!! Its a BIG slice of pie but not at all heavy and beautifully cooked. The cafe/bar did not disappoint. Both gentleman serving were cheerful and very welcoming. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone. Thank you!

My daughter found this place online based on pie recommendations, and it did not disappoint! First, it's a really cool, old pub. You can imagine hundreds of years worth of conversation, deal making, and beer drinking happening in a place like this. Lots of great ambience.

Now add the friendly greeting you get as you approach, the great service, and the fantastic pie, and you have an excellent midafternoon break from wandering Amsterdam.

After spending a night at this place i was talking to the bar staff about what to do with my empty glasses that we had had to pay €1 a pièce for, when i got overed with garbage by one of the employees. I told them i found this very rude and then walked away. A few minutes later the owner came and pushed me,yelling why i had been so rude to his staff. I was completely taken aback, which man pushes a woman? Which bar owner pushes a client?

Cafe Papeneiland is one of the most authentic, inviting, and picturesque bruine kroegs (brown bars) in all of Amsterdam. Datining back to the mid 1600's (anno 1642), you can' t get much more authentic, one step in the door and the ambiance created by the leaded glass, wood paneled walls, and Delft tiles takes you right b.ack in time. They even still have hard boiled eggs available on the bar, displayed in an ancient, ornamental egg holder. Located right on the corner of the Prinsengracht and Brouwersgrcht (canals), the views are quintesential Amsterdam. There are remnants of a secret tunnel inside one of the closets, that the popes used to use to go under the canal, across to an old Catholic church. The staff will show you if you ask to see. The bier choice is somewhat limited, but good, and if you never have, you must try one of the Van Wees jenevers they have, I suggest starting with the 3 jaar. Some folks here have complained about the service, but that is merely just Americans not used to Dutch culture, if someone hasn't been able to help you, get off yer duff and go order at the bar. The upstairs window has beautifull views, so nice to sit there during the rain especially. Terras seating is available, and a great place to just sit and watch the world go by. The Apple pie here is to die for. Papeneiland has even been visited by former president Bill Clinton, check on you tube. Also very close to the Noorderkerk (north church). Once again, a must visit!!!

Seriously. The golden light flowing from the windows out onto the wet pavement below looked like something out of a painting by one of the Dutch masters. Eat your heart out, Peter Claesz. Or maybe just some apple pie. I couldn't help be drawn in. Once there, I had an enjoyable conversation with the bar's affable staff and enjoyed some beer and that self-same pie. The decor itself was winning, but the staff really made the experience memorable.

A great old Dutch cafe off the beaten path and definitely worth a stop. A brown cafe where locals still frequent on a corner with great casual people watching without the hordes of tourists. If we are back thru Amsterdam, you can bet we will stop again here.

We walked for ages to find this place after reading about the amazing apple pie. When we got there, it was just us and some locals.
There was a black board with the menu in dutch as you would expect. I asked the owner if he had any English menus like many places in Amsterdam. But he responded "No this is Holland. I wouldn't get a dutch menu in England would I".
We were a bit taken a back but decided to stay and order three apple pies.
These pies are great. They would be perfect if served warm but we were too scared to ask the owner if they could be heated.

Although the apple pies are great, I wouldn't recommend this place. The owner ruins the experience and it leaves a bitter taste.

My advice to the owner would be to lighten up. No one deserves to be treated like you treated us.

Heard about apple tart and old time bar. Wanted to check it out. Mentioned Bill Clinton liked the apple pie. Waiter asked if we are democrats. We said we are republicans. I thought he was going to spit in the tart and dump our beer. Wow. Really?
