The area

Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Just plain busy. Gone are all the eateries to be replaced by chain retail shops. It has steadily gotten worse as the street is dirty and filled with wannabees and pretenders. Our first visit 30+ years ago the street was charming and filled with hidden alleys of adventure. We were here four years ago and saw the change immediately and noted the cheap looking retail stores and it reminded me of the middle of Newark. Now I would be afraid to go down any of the alleys. Kalverstraat translates to cattle street which unfortunately is a more appropriate name today. Sad.

Very nice street with a huge number of shops on both sides. Lots of famous brand clothing stores. Also a huge amount of food places dotted about serving everything from Churros to Kebab. A few pubs along the way too. One of the most famous frite/chip shops is near here too called Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx.

This is a busy pedestrian shopping street and area of Amsterdam. Although I love shopping, I was most impressed by the beautiful architecture of its buildings. The street gets its name from calves market which was held here until sometime if the 17th century. This is the most expensive shopping street in the Netherlands. Although I say it is expensive shopping at Kalverstraat shops, relative to most of the rest of the world (and I’ve been to over 100 countries), I find the prices for most goods in Western Europe to be expensive. Even if you don't anything, it is a nice street to walk down, stop at a cafe for drinks and pastries, and chill out.

Great shopping street. Lots of Dutch chain stores here, shoe stores, record/cd stores, cafes, clothing stores, everything, it is pretty much THE main shopping street in Amsterdam. It is always very, very crowded. You will find pretty much everything you want here. You can also eat your way down this street as well. Make sure you stop at the Hema Department store for a famous "Hema sausage" (minus the bun). If you are coming to Amsterdam for the first time, you will love this street. Even though it is filled with "regular" stores, it still has such a European feel to it. Not to be missed.

Mostly mainstream brand shops are located along this street (about 1 km). There is no traffic (cars, bikes etc...) only people and more people. It's always crowded and if you don't like hordes of people, then I suggest you go somewhere else....

This is a street you will be passing through numerous times if you happen to be going through tourist neighborhoods. No need to actively seek it...

If you are into shopping, then this is the place to be. Lots of brands are present here.
The best part is that most shops have wifi.

This is a bustling hustling place. Not my cup of tea. I like shopping but not crowds. There are tons of shops, but I didn't get anything in any of the ones I entered. I did get some good ice cream though.

Jammed full of people on a Saturday afternoon, this is the major shopping street, stretches for a long distance with lots of the stores you know, plus some unique ones. I found the crowds overwhelming.
