In 1613 Joost became proprietor of the cloth shop at Warmoesstraat 39, supplying silk stockings and other clothing articles to Amsterdam's finest. Sadly, around 1658, Joost lost his business, as well as his son Joost Jr and he started working for the Credit Bank. The statuette placed on the face of the building reminds of better times in Joost's life and honors him as one of Holland's greatest poets.

Joost van den Vondel was a Dutch poet, writer and playwright of the 17th century. This statue was one of historical human figures on the wall of the stock exchange building of Amsterdam. He lived and had a shop on warmoestraat. The address above was not correct for this statue. The exact location of the statue is high on the wall at the back side of the stock exchange building, just on the opposite of a shop on Warmoestraat number 111.
