The area

Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Oh of course, it's not the emblematic monument of Amsterdam to visit first. This square and this statue may seem rather ordinary. And yet, it commemorates a unique event of the Second World War that even the Germans were surprised by: faced with the "mistreatment" of Jews, Dutch workers decided on a general strike. Unique fact during this war, thus showing their courage in the face of the invader. Of course, she was very harshly repressed, but at least had the courage to exist.
So, if you are in the neighborhood, between a synagogue, a Jewish museum, a botanical garden, a zoo... take a quick stroll through this little square, and let the emotion carry you away.

Bronze statue erected as a tribute to the brave people participating in the 1941 February strike, against persecution of Jews by the German occupiers. Striking object.

The Dokwerker is a statue of a dockworker and a monument located on Jonas Daniël Meijerplein in Amsterdam, a square next to the Portuguese Synagoge Amsterdam. It is as a remembrance of the "Februaristaking", strike in Februari 1941. This bronze statue was made by sculptor Mari Andriessen.
