There are small bridge crossings scattered throughout central Amsterdam. And then you find Torensluis, which is one of the widest in the entire city at 42 metres wide.
The reason for the size of this particular bridge is that it included tower as part of its original construction in the mid 17th-century.
These days, you find a large open space with wide views of the Single, as you cross Torensluis. On the north side of the bridge there is an interesting contemporary statue of 19th-century Dutch writer Eduard Douwes Dekker (Multatuli).

If nobody told me the special feature of this bridge in advance, I would not notice that this is the widest bridge in town. Apart from the statue there, open sittings of the cafe nearby are also on this bridge. See if you can recognize such while you walk around this area.

Torensluis is a rather wide bridge, a bit too wide even! But that is probably good in any case, as it allows pedestrians to wander around the bridge quite freely, at least more so than on any other bridge. It is a bit old but well kept and maintained and it's got a protection order over it. The main attraction on the bridge, apart from the beautiful and panoramic views, is a statue of a very important Dutch man by the name of Multatuli, the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker, one of the most important people of letters in the Netherlands, and an anti-colonialist.

Torensluis is one of the widest bridges in the canal ring of Amsterdam. It is well worth checking out on your stroll round the area and it has a statue on the bridge of Multatuli. When I visited in July 2022 various nearby bars had seating across the bridge so it was a particularly nice area to sit and relax and enjoy the view.
Well worth checking out when you visit this Dutch city.

The Torensluis or tower lock is a wide bridge over the Singel. The reason for such a spacious set-up was to accommodate a prison under the tower. Although the prison was supposed to be open to the public, it wasn't open when I was there and looked like it hadn't been open for some time.

By Amsterdam standards this is one very ordinary bridge, it is wide but there is very little else to be said to make it worth picking out as a vistor attraction

This bridge is so wide that we didn't even notice it was a bridge until it was pointed out to us. There is no need to see and there are shops and seating nearby.

Torensluis (tower lock) is an arch bridge over the singel canal. It's also called "Burg 9" ( bridge number 9). This is the oldest (1648) and widest (42m) Arch Bridge in Amsterdam. It's now a national monument. There was the Jan Roodenpoortstoren (tower) on the bridge until 1892. The tower was a part of the old city wall. One of the 4 arches was used as a prison. This prison space was open for the public, actually but it's now under construction. It would be a community centre in the future. On the bridge you still see the contours of the former foot tower. A statue of "Multatuli", the writer of "Max Havelaar" was revealed in 1987 by the former Queen Beatrix. It's now on the bridge at the middle of the foot tower countours. In the summer this bride is used as a terrace from the cafes in the neighbourhood.
