Neighborhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Spui is a popular area of Amsterdam. Here you find interesting sightseeing such as Amsterdam Museum, Begijnhof and historic brown bars like Cafe Hoppe.

You'll also find interesting sculptures like Lieverdije (Little Darling) as well as a similar sculpture called Vrouw met Stola (woman with shawl) situated just along Herensgracht just south of the square.

If you visit on Sundays, there is also an art fair called Artplein Spui. This open market is held from 10am to 6pm and includes around 20-25 stalls selling handmade jewellery, paintings, drawings and other arts & craft related items.

I found this square by mistake actually, after I was at the Begijnhof. It is just near there. Lots to see, a few cafes, some restaurants, bookshops and other retailers too. There are a couple of art shows in this area each week during the non-rainy season.

Well worth checking out for sure, there are trams and bike paths which go right by this little area so it is easy to get to. Worth a half an hour to explore.

The central tourist area of Amsterdam can be very busy especially at the weekend so it's good to find an area nearby that is slightly more relaxing but with some nice places to eat and drink.
I read in our guide book that Spui was described as "genial" and that's a good description. It's a short tram ride or walk from the Central Station and there is a good choice of restaurants and bars in a very small area.

You don't really realise you have entered Spui because it is just down the road from Dam and for most people it is just an extension of Dam along Nieuwezjids Voorburgwaal. There are shops, restaurants, bars, etc. around the area.

If you ask me what are the landmarks of Spui, I would say The Seafood Bar, a trendy looking small seafood outlet.

It is within walking distance from Central Station as well as Museumplein. Tram 1, 2 and 5 passes by here.

Originally a wetland, filled in, later uses included a carpark, now a nice square, surrounded by cafes and bars, it is a nice area just to take a stroll in.

Like other neighborhood, but has lots of pockets of restaurants. Wouldn't say there's much other than walking to do and eating place to scope out.

This is a great place to have a drink and watch the people and the trams go by. We stopped at De Brabantse Aap and had a beer.

Yes, it is a small square but it has everything. Surrounded by cafes, restaurants, two bookshops, fashionshop, the oldest music shop, a student Association, three churches, and many more. Every Sunday from March to December, there is an Art Market and that's why Spui is also called "Artplein" ( art square). And every Friday there is a (second hand-antiquarian) book market. And ofcourse not to forget is the famous "Begijnhof" (beguinage). It's a nice place but it's always crowded except when it's raining.

Pollarding is a method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow. But, I had never seen Sycamore trees topped off this way, but they gave this square an ambiance that only helped treasure and capture the moment of our ascent through the arched stepped corridor from the garden interior of Begijnhof, which was and still is the place for sheltered, mostly pious women.

Definitely a more quiet spot and warm and sunny when we visited. People were socializing, reading books, eating sandwiches and watching other people.
