Love SAMDESMANs free tours in general. Our guide, Tim, was exactly the right height. The tour was well presented, with a sense of humor and cynical approach. Well done.

We had Axl as our guide, and it was great. He gave us a bigger knowledge about the city and the hidden treasures. However, three hours is a loong time and the break in the middle could have been a bit shorter.

A great insight to the ins and outs of the area. Lisa was the tour guide to have! She did a brilliant job showing us around and answering any of our groups questions. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to know more about the red light district and its past and present.

I have gone to a couple of free walking tours all over Europe, Australia, NZ, etc and I must say, Sandeman's Amsterdam tour with Kor is the BEST, and is one for the books!! We had such a good time learning about Netherlands the country and how it came about, then Amsterdam, the city and its history, tidbits, trivia about... More

Raquel was a great guide! She was funny and entertaining. We got to know lots of things about Amsterdam that we would have never got the chance otherwise. She recommended lots of places to visit that were really cool and that we would have never found ourselves <3

Kendra did a great job leading our tour and was very funny while sharing the history of Amsterdam and the Dutch. She was very knowledgeable and the three hours we were out flew by!

I did the Sandemans free walking tour of the city in July with a group of friends. Our tour guide was hilarious! Very informative and made the tour extremely enjoyable! The Sandemans walking tours aren't like the traditional walking tours in the city they are far more enjoyable and FREE!! We did our walking tour on a Thursday at 11:15am... More

We took the Red Light District tour and it was great. Lisa was our guide and she was funny, informative, and entertaining. The tour was about 2 hours, but never dull. She gave us information on how the RLD started, how things work now, and issues it's facing in the future. Most tourists probably just go to the RLD and... More

Sandemans never disappoints. Our guide, Dominique, delved into great detail about Amsterdam's history, culture, architecture, religion, and food. She also provided a great list of recommendations for food, drink, and other consumptives. Highly recommended!

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
