There are three floors, when we went there, on the first floor there was an exhibition dedicated to history, the second floor had miscellaneous items of art and on the third floor there was the exhibition of the Bergen school, which is really interesting and unexpected.

We enjoyed the temporary exhibitions, especially the one of Van Blaaderen. The Picasso exhibition was a bit disappointing with only 2 paintings and a chair. The Golden age collection of paintings is impressive just like the 'Bergen School'-collection. Would recommend for a visit.

A lot of this was centered on historical portraits. I'm not the biggest fan of that. I did like the history component an the Alkmaar area impressionists works

Alkmaar is usually associated with cheese. Now it has a Picasso connection as well at the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar (07.06.2016 - 28.08.2016). Captivating! In case you wonder, the chair is not just a chair, but the chair Picasso used to paint "Les Belles Hollandaises". Hence it got a place in the museum as well. BTW, the exhbition room is relatively... It is an interesting museum. Lots of history! It is not a museum I would take my children to but for an adult it's great!

This museum displays some nice historic paintings. There's also some armour and skeletons. Not bad, but I had expected a larger collection, given the important siege during the 80-years war.

The story of September/October 1616 is fascinating. The visual effects of a video image of a real person talking to you that is motion activated is very smart. The audio part though is a bit cumbersome because the screens of different parts of the Spanish siege are in hearing distance from each other and that makes it harder to concentrate... More

This museum provides information about the history of Alkmaar as well as giving art exhibitions. The most interesting part of the museum probably the history part. The story of how the citizens fought the Spanish is told very nicely in detail. The other parts of the museum are the art exhibitions. They are also good, although not as impressive as... More

I visited this really nice museum to get to know more about Alkmaar. At the moment there is a exhibtion called the golden age. It tells the everything from about Alkmaar around that time. A very important fact is Spanish war 1573. In June the museum started a new exhibtion that will go on for many years to come about... More

I really enjoyed the varied SUMMER EXHIBITIONS.The paintings by the various relatives of the" KRUSEMAN FAMILY OF PAINTERS 1820-1860" where an example of pure 19th century taste. On the upper floor the BERGENSE SCHOOL exhibition offered a good insight of the painters who worked around 1920-1930 in BERGEN. In the basement I enjoyed the historical collection focussing on ALKMAAR'S GOLDEN AGE... More
