Always fun... a visit to this museum. Beautiful exhibition spaces, pleasantly spacious museum restaurant and bookshop. We visited the temporary exhibition about the work of Fiona Tan (*1966), who directed the creation of the enormous stained glass window that was recently installed in the Grote or Laurentius Church in Alkmaar. Nice project! Enjoyed the playful object "Sparkling Desire" by Marinke van Zandwijk (*1987), a kind of assembly of glass balls, etc., blown in Leerdam. That makes you happy, all those colors. Of course, let's take another look at the paintings of the Bergen School. The museum has many works from this movement in its permanent collection. This time, to our pleasant surprise, various works by Dirk Filarski (1885-1964) were shown, including a beautiful winter landscape. Nice museum.. worth a visit.

The Lucebert exhibition was fascinating. Unlike in the other SMA (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam), this was not a strolling exhibition for tourists. For the fascinating works of an honest and versatile artist, the visitors involved held fierce discussions.
Too bad that the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar does not think independently. The artist Tedja, already extensively and repeatedly performed in the other SMA, was once again shown in Alkmaar. Although in the pretentious Amsterdam art temple with the even more ambitious curators he completely fell through the cracks as a conscientious artist. This politically correct art has no inner necessity or visual power at all, neatly ticks all the subsidy requirements and is completely interchangeable. It was therefore no wonder that there was no interest in this subsidy artist who had been lifted over the horse.
This minus is fully compensated by the collection of old art that relates to Alkmaar. All in all an inexorable hit!

Beautiful exhibition with 100 works of art by Lucebert. Lucebert is not entirely uncontroversial, but in addition to being a brilliant poet, he was also a painter. He liked bright colors. Not everything is beautiful, but always interesting.

Spend a wonderful time looking at the marvelous paintings that once were part of the Paul Rijkens Collection. Rijkens founded Unilever, made the Bilderberg Meetings happen, and was a great patron and connoisseur of contemporary art. Really worth a visit!
It's a nice museum, and very well organized now under Covid-19 rules!

Alkmaar is usually associated with cheese. Now it has a Picasso connection as well at the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar (07.06.2016 - 28.08.2016). Captivating! In case you wonder, the chair is not just a chair, but the chair Picasso used to paint "Les Belles Hollandaises". Hence it got a place in the museum as well.
BTW, the exhbition room is relatively small, so there are visiting slots for 30 minutes max. We were lucky. We stayed for 35 minutes, reading and enjoying the many sketches. The bi-lingual commentary is excellent, in Dutch (of course) and in English.
The museum shows a 2nd special exhibition called "Van Blaaderen - Modernist in Bergen" form 27.02.2016 - 28.08.201. An eye opener. We loved it. At the time, Van Blaaderen (1873 - 1935) was seen as one of the most important modern artists of the Netherlands. His paintings reportedly fetched more money than a Mondriaan painting (at the time).
The museum is walking distance from the railway station.

Alkmaar's city museum is smallish, but extremely well presented. One hall is dedicated to the siege of Alkmaar in the 16th century, whilst the other hall presents the prosperity of the town in the 17th century. They have some beautiful paintings. The modern city is still recognisable on the old paintings as the landmarks are well preserved. It is also interesting for foreign visitors as explanations are both given in Dutch and English.

This small but interesting temp.expo offers paintings by the 3 generations of the artist family Toorop.
Jan Toorop (Java 1858-Den Haag 1928),Charley Toorop (Katwijk 1891- Bergen N-H 1955) and Edgar Fernhout (Bergen N-H1912-Bergen N-H1974) used a wide variety of styles and techniques.
The permanent collection offers a fine selection of old masters and modern art of the so called" Bergense School"

We visited the exhibition on the victory by the defenders of Alkmaar against the Spanish invaders in 1573 and thought that it was very well done. It brought the story to life in an informative and entertaining way. We then saw the Golden Age art from Alkmaar, which also tells you a lot about the city’s history. All in all, certainly worth a short visit.

It so happened I was the only person for the English-speaking tour. So, I had my own private tour of the special design exhibit, Wanders. The guide was excellent. This museum also has an excellent bookstore. This is the "city" museum and focuses more on modern (1950-80) art. It is every bit as good as the "old masters" museums.
