About
Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, which opened in 1875, is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. The museum manages the Alkmaar City Council collection, with more than 12,000 objects. The collection of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century paintings is outstanding, with masterpieces of national significance. The museum is also known for its large collection of Bergen School works. Paul Rijkens Collection
Jul 2020
Spend a wonderful time looking at the marvelous paintings that once were part of the Paul Rijkens Collection. Rijkens founded Unilever, made the Bilderberg Meetings happen, and was a great patron and connoisseur of contemporary art. Really worth a visit!
It's a nice museum, and very well organized now under Covid-19 rules!

Excellent museum
Mar 2020
Alkmaar is generally a very charming place, with tourists often coming on the day of cheese market. That's really very touristy. Go there only if you are a REAL tourist. For the rest Alkmaar is lovely and the Stedelijk Museum has great exhibitions and a very interesting collection. The top floor has a good collection of artists from the Bergen School. And some of the temporary exhibitions were really great! If you go to Alkmaar, check it out.

An exhibition on the painters Jan Toorop;Charley Toorop and her son Edgar Fernhout
Nov 2019
This small but interesting temp.expo offers paintings by the 3 generations of the artist family Toorop.
Jan Toorop (Java 1858-Den Haag 1928),Charley Toorop (Katwijk 1891- Bergen N-H 1955) and Edgar Fernhout (Bergen N-H1912-Bergen N-H1974) used a wide variety of styles and techniques.
The permanent collection offers a fine selection of old masters and modern art of the so called" Bergense School"

Interesting museum well worth a visit
Sep 2019
Always difficult to review a museum/art gallery, because the exhibitions change and tastes differ. The current exhibition upstairs of art by the Bergen School didn’t much appeal to me, but it was well laid out and there was plenty of space to appreciate the paintings. There is a good permanent interactive exhibition on the 16th century Spanish siege of Alkmaar, and an interesting selection of paintings and artefacts from the “Golden Age”. Plenty of well fed burghers and their sombre wives.

Enjoyable museum

We visited the exhibition on the victory by the defenders of Alkmaar against the Spanish invaders in 1573 and thought that it was very well done. It brought the story to life in an informative and entertaining way. We then saw the Golden Age art from Alkmaar, which also tells you a lot about the city’s history. All in all, certainly worth a short visit.

It's interesting to see the history of Alkmaar shown in this manner. It's done nicely and the other expositions are worth their entree fee.

The museum shows a lot of different aspects of the Alkmaar history. Certainly worth a visit. Do not forget to pay the church across the market square a visit as well.
