Visited pre Xmas to watch André Rieu “Christmas in my home Town concert” spent 3 wonderful days there. Vrijthof square was packed with Xmas stalls, food outlets and even an Ice skating rink. The whole old town was full of Xmas lights and music. Absolutely magical. Plenty of places to eat good quality and a wide variety of food. English was very well spoken by all the locals that we interacted with. Parking was very good. Will go back there at any opportunity

Vrijthof is a erfect place to sit at a cafe/restaurant with a drink and watch the world go by.

We stayed in a Hotel Amrath just around the corner which was perfect.

We walked from the train station about 15 min.

Highly recommended

We bought The Andre Rieu VIP Package which included hotel, meals and concert tickets. Our seats were in the front row and all was enjoyable until just after the interval when hoards of people who had bought tickets at the back suddenly stormed to the front and stood in front of us, crushing and trampling on our feet and totally blocking our view of the stage. Apparently this is quite acceptable to the organizers so beware If you pay for VIP seats at the front because you are going to get crushed and your view blocked as apparently it happens at every concert. Those paying for the privilege of sitting at the front shouldn't have to put up with this. It completely ruined what, up to then, was a very enjoyable event. Better to buy a ticket at the back!

We (two friends) came off a Prague-Budapest-Amsterdam Cruise. We had purchased an Andre Rieu VIP Package to the 20 July Concert. We booked through Andre Rieu Travel Co (good operators, all by email) three weeks before departing NZ. We caught a 9.30am train from Amsterdam to Maastricht Station (about 25EU each), taxi to Hotel Kruisherenhotel and that's where a whole new experience started. After dinner, along with others (from all over the globe) we were led by a marching band through windy streets, everyone waving their country flag to arrive in the Vrijthof. What a venue, what an atmosphere filled with people from everywhere and the concert -wow- we did not want the concert to stop. The Mayor and Leaders of Maastricht along with Andre Rieu are to be congratulated for maintaining and developing a charming venue that is open to the World but still richly the Vrijthof Maastricht. As travellers we are genuinely cautious with costs but this holiday grew from enjoyable to an absolutely unbelievable memorable experience. We say "never let the money overshadow the experience" . Check out a visit to Maastricht (a beautiful town) and wander around the Vrijthof - better still, go to an Andre Rieu Concert in the Vrijthod!

Footnote: From Maastricht, we caught a train into Belgium ...

Sadly disappointing.

I'd booked my hotel and premium seat through Andre Rieu Travel.

The hotel, The Student Hotel, Maastricht, was very poor. A converted factory, which is totally unsuitable as an hotel. Checking in was totally chaotic, and my room wasn't available until after 3pm. So couldn't get a shower and freshen up on arrival. Reception/Check-in had no organisation whatsoever. Then, the lift serving the hotel rooms was a joke. It's primarily purpose is to serve a public rooftop bar on the 8th floor. Getting to/from hotel rooms took forever. And, when it came to breakfast, things got worse. Very narrow access to the serving areas, with people constantly pushing past, spilling food and drink over each-other. I also tripped on a hidden step. Ended up having to change my clothes, as people spilled milk, coffee, and cooked tomatoes all over me. Apparently, this happens every day. Even the chef ended up with food all over him. I'd recommend avoiding the Student Hotel Maastricht (whereas, the Student Hotel, Amsterdam City, on the previous night, was excellent).

Getting to/from the concert wasn't easy. Apparently, the city authorities don't let Andre's people put up any signposting. As such, hundreds of people were wandering around asking "which way to the Vritof Square". That's madness, considering how much money the Andre Rieu concerts bring to the city. However, even if they can't put up signs, there's no reason why Andre Rieu Travel couldn't have had some guides in key places, telling us which way to go, to get to the concert and finding our way back to our hotels afterwards. I got carried along by the crowds after the show and, once the crowd thinned out, was totally lost on deserted streets for around 2 hours.

The concert itself was also disappointing. I'd booked for the last night immediately tickets went on sale. I thought that the final night in Andre's home town would be extra special. Unfortunately, Andre then added a couple more weeks to the season. The performance felt tired. It lacked energy and, as others have said, some of the humourous bits were well past their sell by date. Also, Andre broke his tried and tested reputation for playing well known and well liked "popular" music. The doubtless exceptional performers were singing arias I'd never heard of, and they weren't very good.

As I mentioned, I'd booked premium seating. Middle section, only a few rows back from the stage. Bad choice. Much of what was going on couldn't be seen. You needed to look at the huge screens, which showed close-ups, like on the DVDs. The drinking joke couldn't be seen from even front row seating. However, my main reason for suggesting you don't book premium seating is "atmosphere". That big crowd atmosphere was behind us. You need to book cheaper seats in the middle of the seating area, so you're surrounded by the crowds, and so you can more easily see what's going on on those enormous screens.

Seating is hard plastic seats. Not suitable for a 3 hour concert. Apparently, my (disorganised) hotel should have given me an official Andre Rieu Travel seat cushion at check-in. But they were too disorganised to, as we say in England, organise a drinking party in a brewery! You really need that seat cushion, and it's a nice souvenir.

It is worth the long (and not always easy) journey from England to see Andre and his orchestra in his home town in the Vritof Square. But, Andre needs to reduce the number of back-to-back performances, as well as remembering that his popularity grew from performing well known "popular" or "accessible" music, as what I saw felt tired, lacking energy, and humdrum.

Key points: avoid the Student Hotel in Maastricht. Get a map and check your route to the Vritof Square. Let most of the crowds leave after the concert, so you can exit the way you went in, and not lose your bearings. Don't book expensive premium seats, as you'll enjoy more atmosphere sitting in the middle. And be sure to collect your Andre Rieu Travel seat cushion from your hotel (or bring one with you).

No idea what time the bars were open until after the concert. It was a Sunday, so I wasn't sure. It'd have been great to have enjoyed a few Dutch beers -- letting the crowds disperse -- before wending my way back to my hotel.

DON'T LET THIS PUT YOU OFF. JUST LEARN FROM MY EXPERIENCE.

we went to see Andre Rieu concert live in the Virthof a large square in Maastricht part of the square was closed of until the concert but the restaurants around were open until about 1500Hrs when the staff put out all the tables for people who were having a dinner and show. We were had tickets to see the show and what a show it was a really great night in a lovely setting I would like to go back to see the square when it is empty so you get a better view of the fine buildings but I do not want to stop the July highlight Andre Rieu if you get a chance to go and see him do.

This was a dream come through for us .My sister and her husband joined my best friend and myself for a trip to Maastricht and the Andre Rieu concert. The whole experience was just so wonderful. We had dinner before at a beautiful restaurant called Ut lieuwke and the service and staff and the dinner was 10 out of 10. Well worth a visit !
We then sat for 3 hours in the Vrijthof ,listening to a brilliant concert , but the atmosphere of this beautiful square was just out of this world. You just have to visit Maastricht and the Vrijthof, truly wonderful

Maastricht is a beautiful city with a wide variety of things to do and see. The highlight for us was attending Andre Rieu's concert on a warm dry evening

We attended an Andre reiu concert here in his home town. Really enjoyed everything about our time here. The square was magical at night . Very very busy . We made the mistake of not having a dinner booking . Very very crowded prior to the concert. We had to make do with a rushed snack in one of the cafes in the next street. It was packed and food was unappealing and very expensive. We should have eaten at the hotel.
Tables are booked a long way ahead and people sit at their table all night to take in the concert.

The atmosphere in the evening was wonderful, people from all over the world enjoying the music, everyone happy. The buildings are beautifully lit and add to the atmosphere.

It's a beautiful little city , hope to visit again next year.
