No sure what to expect entering this type of museum in the middle of a city but it was brilliant. Covers city development related to canals, boats, art and people. Includes workshops relating to sails, masts, rope etc plus a display of early marine Diesel engines. Introduction guide on English, route guide to rooms which is also clearly marked in... More

Good models of boats and artefacts telling the history of shipping in the area. A few interactive displays. Very little information in English. The museum is housed in two very old buildings and is over many floors - there is no lift.

The museum gives a very good impression about shipping in this part of the Netherlands. The Groninger Shipping is leading in the Netherlands.

Fascinating museum that's a mix of many things that should appeal to both the young and the old. We thought we'd spend an hour or so here using our Museum cards, before heading out again, and then ended up spending the entire afternoon there. Well worth the time!

I was really interested in the exhibition. It was really wide, and huge. The building itself was also worth a visit. But there were no english subtitles, so I could not really follow what I see, neither learn too many new things. Even though I was really interested in the topic.

Fascinating history of Groningen and the importance of shipping of all kinds since the earliest archaeological records. Set in a pair of historic buildings over many levels. There is a leaflet/guide in English but a little Dutch helps here. It is like a museum should be - full of maps, paintings, objects, displays and models for the visitor to discover.... More

We've been to several maritime museums in the Netherlands and while they all house many similar exhibits each has a local slant and this is no different with good insights into Groningens past maritime history. Helpful staff, and some fantastic diesel engines on show...if you like boats and boat history you'll love this place.

The Northern Maritime Museum is perfectly located in the old city of Groningen. It is very short distance from a major canal, so the location has the perfect atmosphere. The museum is in a collection of old buildings and the logical "path" through history flows between buildings and floor to floor. There are some highlights, include a superb collection of... More
