- Venture630253722664 contributionsA splendid surprise!Of course we knew of the brothers van Lymborch, but to find out that they had learned their craft in this very spot under the guidance of their uncle, the famous medieval Dutch artist Johan Maelwael, was a real surprise. Our tour guide Henny did a great job explaining their story. The small museum shop is a treasure trove all by itself. I wish the volunteers who run the museum all possible success in procuring more official funding to continue archaeological research onsite.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 3, 2024
- Alexander K1 contributionEntertaining, interesting and historical tour of the museumWithout much art experience or specialist knowledge, we spontaneously decided to take part in the tour. We were both pleasantly surprised to learn exciting stories and interesting background information about the Lymborch brothers. Thank you Arjen! - sjmluckettLondon, United Kingdom189 contributionsGreat insight into the foundation of Dutch ArtWe loved our tour of the birthplace of the lymbourg brothers. To think these three lads and their Uncle Johan Maelwael revolutionised the history of art in Europe. A terrific video followed by a talk by Theo and tour of the cellars proved most insightful. Best known for their Book of Hours Les Très Riches Heures these miniature paintings exhibited outstanding quality and depth of detail. Nijmegen still keeps these Masters of the Middle Ages a hidden secret. So much more can be done to publicise this unique talent more widely. A real gem. Just note that the tour commences at the start of the booking period - the booking slot is not a window of time to turn up later as we did - though they accommodated as gracefully. Well worth the visit.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2024

The van Lymborch brothers from Nijmegen were such talented painters/illuminators that the mighty French court employed them. Their famous "books of hours" are absolute masterpieces of the Middle Ages. This small museum is located in their actual Nijmegen home. A documentary shows the essence of their work. You can even visit the original medieval cellar. It's not big but since its excellent central location I would recommend a quick visit for EUR 4.- pp. I hope the city of Nijmegen one day can dedicate more space to these wonderful painters.

Sweet little hidden place in the center, recommended if you have some interest in medieval art. It's not quite a museum (also in terms of size), but there are lovely facsimile and large/enlarged reproductions to look at from closeby, plus a great story about the brothers' history and context from the very friendly guide - and also really pretty postcards and mugs and other such souvenirs. Deffs recommended.

We were enchanted by this tiny place and the story about the artists brothers. You’ve definitely seen the works of these artists throughout your life, here you can imagine yourself in their time 600 years ago. The enthusiasm of the museums personnel and the personalized attention to each visitor makes it a really pleasant and memorable experience.

This little pretty museum tells you on the talented 3 brother painters of van lymborc who used to reside in this place. Even if you don’t know about the painters, no worries, an gentleman who has known about the painters so deeply would lecture, guide and show you on the painters and works. I didn’t know about the painters until I got to the place and it was a great opportunity for me to get to know. The most characteristic of the paintings are lapis lazuli blue. So impressive in his most of the works. It was a very expensive material and you learn how they could obtain it and could use it well for their work from the guide… they had a rich patron. Not only to enjoy the painting but this kind of history is worthwhile to hear.

Today we were guided through the birthplace of the Van Lymborch brothers in a special and historically very interesting way. Theo, our expert and undisturbed guide, remained friendly through all my questions and revealed the miracles of the brothers and their ancestors. A beautiful discovery that modern painting was born here, not in France, Belgium, Germany or GB, but in Nijmegen in our small Netherlands. Even though there are no original works of art in this museum, I recommend everyone book a tour and without knowing the other guides, make sure you get Theo!

This little jewel of a museum is well worth visiting. It pays homage to the Limbourg brothers - Dutch miniature painters from Nijmegen, active in the 15th century. They were commissioned by the most powerful courts in Europe and produced works such as the Book of Hours for the Duke of Berry.
On the site of the museum was their workshop. The very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide will take you on a journey to the 15th century introducing their patrons and commissions and also a visit to the cellar showing the original medieval walls, where the Limbourg produced their amazing artworks!

Very interesting museum, about the painting Lymborch brothers. Guide Arjen guided us through the museum, he had a lot of knowledge about the context in which the works of art were created and why the works of art are interesting. The museum is not large, you can see it within an hour, but the good guide will tell you about the special works of art that the Lymborch brothers have created.

The House of the Brothers of Lymborgh is not so much a museum as an experience. Most of the visit consisted of a fascinating story about the brothers by a guide, illustrated with copies of the beautiful miniatures made by the Lymborgh brothers in some of the books of hours. A visit is highly recommended, especially if you are interested in medieval (miniature) painting and some innovations in that art. There is also a small tour of the medieval cellar of the birthplace of the three brothers. And you can admire two handmade copies of the two most famous books of hours: 'Les Belles Heures' and 'Les Très Riches Heures'.

Led by Marius, the guide, the six of us had a fantastic tour of the Maelwael Van Lymborch House. Marius' enthusiasm was contagious and we were convincingly informed of the history of these families and the history of the House.
Thanks again for the very special tour.
We recommend everyone to also take part in this beautiful tour of this special historical place.
