This tiny and well-restored church is located in Valkhof park. There are pretty paintings on the wall but some are diminishing. Entrance fee is free but 2 euro donation is asked voluntarily.

The Valkhofpark is the most interesting place in Nijmegen. And Sint-Nicolaas chapel is located in this park, it is one of the remains from the castle of the Emperor Barbarossa. The chapel is small but there is a lot information about the history of the monument. Also you can see a scale model of the castle in the chapel. It is a must visit place.

The monumental Romanesque Valkhofkapel-St.Nicolaaskapel was build in the year 1030.The early Romanesque architecture was inspired by the architecture of the "Paltskapel Aachen" in Germany build by Charlemagne.
I enjoyed the fact that the chapel-interior was open to admire;the visit was free of charge but a 2euro donation is appreciated for the upkeep of the monument.
Nijmegen's central Valkhof Park offers the ruins of the apsis of the 12th century Romanesque Sint Maartenskapel as well.
The rest of the former Valkhof castle was demolished in the 18th century.
In 1795 it was decided to demolish the former Valkhof castle damaged by the French attack on Willem 5 of Oranje-Nassau who was hiding in the Valkhof castle.
The site of Valkhof-kapel and castle has been inhabited since Roman times making it one of the older monuments of the Netherlands comparable to Roman settlements at Voorburg( Zuid Holland) and Maastricht( Limburg).
