Lovely experience

The museum brings the story of Sneek's history and marine agriculture. A very nice experience, and for boat / ship model fans a must visit recommend

Just I was becoming bored by row after row of ship models in glass cases, in the upstairs section (don't worry, there's an elevator), dedicated to ice skating the museum came to life. I won't say that the ships and shipping section of the museum is a complete waste of time, because some real treasures can be viewed, such as... More

we stopped by here instead of walking around the town due to the rain,,, we were not disappointed, staff were friendly, spoke english and gave us good directions . We spent a couple of hours looking round . Displays were different from other museum with many ship and canal boat models. It even touch on more modern watching which is... More

The museum is within easy walking distance of the train station and the scenic Waterpoort and the entry free of 6 euros was not exorbitant. We spent several hours taking in the exhibits, we didn't rush, it was very well done - we definitely came to understand just how important the waterways and the vessels that used them were to... Having been to a few maritime museums around the world this one rates among the very best. With a very local ( Friesland) focus it documents the regions maritime history with a vast array of exhibits from old barge interiors, to barge owners home styles and decoration, sailing vessels of every kind including a huge range of traditional skujtse sailboats.... We wanted to visit the museum and have lunch, but canal side parking was expensive and limited to 2 hours. Luckily the VVV office was in the museum building and directed us to cheaper, nearby, long term parking. The museum is large and modern with a variety of exhibits most of which relate to ships and shipping. There are also... More

In a shipping museum one expects some full-size boats. There are some inside this museum, but only of fairly small boats. Curiously, the German shipping (or inland waterways) museum in Duisburg has a full-size Frisian ship on display. I think this museum should have a part in the canals of Sneek with some museum boats. Quite interesting is the Roman... More

Very detailed museum that tells of the long history of shipping in the Netherlands, in particular Friesland. Great collection of artifacts, very well displayed. I don't recall that everything is translated into English; perhaps they have printed info in English.
