Eventhough shopping, Limmat river and Lake Zurich might be the primary reason for going to Zürich do not overlook the charming Schanzengraben Canal. Built as a city fortification system in the 17th century, the canal is now lined with wooden boardwalks and sandstone slabs, and runs from the Gessnerbrücke past the Mannerbadi to the mouth of the lake at Bürkliplatz. It’s at its prettiest near the Baur au Lac hotel, but the action—water polo!—happens near the Selnaubrücke. Are you here with your dog it will propably love to dip its toes in the crystal clear water.

We better know the segment of the canal that runs from behind Baur au Lac up to Hallenbad City. We look at it at year's all seasons. Enjoy its calm in the middle of the city. We enjoy the nice little houses along the canal as well as the cool office buildings and cafe terraces but mainly the trees decorating it all along which change their seasonal colors until they shed their leaves in the winter. There are lots of boats parking in the canal. Very few seem to be active even over weekends. Quite an expensive way to own a boat in Zurich.

We crossed this lovely canal many times as our hotel was on the other side of the canal from the main part of Zurich. Quiet, peaceful and picturesque.

Zurich has a lot of waterfront between the lake and 2 rivers but it is this man made defensive canal that once was a part of the city fortifications that provides the quietest waterfront we saw in the Altstadt. If you are looking for an opportunity to get away from the crowds this will offer your best opportunity.

the Schanzengraben is a chanel hidden away from the main tourist circuits, leading from the lake almost to the railway station. a nice way to stroll an area that is a bit less known.

There is a long boardwalk-style walking path near the downstream end of the canal. You'll find it very crowded at lunchtime on warm Spring and Fall weekdays. People bring their dogs, too. They can often be seen frolicking in the water. The canal goes close by many stores, restaurants, bars, etc., and is kind of a hidden gem in Zürich. Try to get to this.

You would never believe you are actually in the middle of the banking sector in Zurich, just behind Paradeplatz. When the weather is fine, people picnic there. Tress refelcting themselves in the water. After approx. one kilometer, the Männerbad (public swimming pool, but only for men, opened in summer, turns into a bar in the evening.

On a hot summer day, walk from the boat landing stage beneath the Baur au Lac Hotell along the little river as far as you can go. Diversified views, pretty boats, plenty of trees and interesting building.

The canal is so unbelievably clean and the water is so clear, I have no idea how it is maintained! The walk along the canal is beautiful and shaded, and there are lots of ducks enjoying the water too. Lovely to sit and relax at the edge

Summer evening stroll or winter weekend mini escape from the shops to go for a walk and chat when you don't have time to get out of the city. The bobbing parked runabouts and manicured balconies make you feel right at home.
