Eventhough shopping, Limmat river and Lake Zurich might be the primary reason for going to Zürich do not overlook the charming Schanzengraben Canal. Built as a city fortification system in the 17th century, the canal is now lined with wooden boardwalks and sandstone slabs, and runs from the Gessnerbrücke past the Mannerbadi to the mouth of the lake at Bürkliplatz. It’s at its prettiest near the Baur au Lac hotel, but the action—water polo!—happens near the Selnaubrücke. Are you here with your dog it will propably love to dip its toes in the crystal clear water.

We better know the segment of the canal that runs from behind Baur au Lac up to Hallenbad City. We look at it at year's all seasons. Enjoy its calm in the middle of the city. We enjoy the nice little houses along the canal as well as the cool office buildings and cafe terraces but mainly the trees decorating it all along which change their seasonal colors until they shed their leaves in the winter. There are lots of boats parking in the canal. Very few seem to be active even over weekends. Quite an expensive way to own a boat in Zurich.

This is a really nice walkway. You can take it at Burkliplatz and under the road and it is generally very quiet. It would seem that not many people either know it or take it.

It ends near the new Swiss Stock Exchange. There are many boats anchored alomng the way, ducks and swans and towards te end there is a club where they play canoe polo I think they call it.

There are seats along the way so it is nice to take a drink and a sandwich and sit and ponder. A really nice place.

the Schanzengraben is a chanel hidden away from the main tourist circuits, leading from the lake almost to the railway station. a nice way to stroll an area that is a bit less known.

This canal walk stretches from the main train station all the way to Burkliplatz.

It's a peaceful and calm stroll on a somewhat hidden trail along the waters edge surrounded by some pretty nice views along the trail of boats, birds, buildings and during the summer months and late fall there are nice red blooming flowers all along the trail.

I spent a few hours walking this trail, including a visit to the old botanic garden and eating my take away lunch on a bench. In late September it was lovely. Warm, sunny, filled with a plethora of the prettiest office workers on lunch hour. I am a terrible photographer, so will not share my pictures, but they bring me great joy as I remember the water, trees (many, many, many) and the glimpse this middle American got into lunch time life for Zurich office workers. Do this!

We crossed this lovely canal many times as our hotel was on the other side of the canal from the main part of Zurich. Quiet, peaceful and picturesque.

Summer evening stroll or winter weekend mini escape from the shops to go for a walk and chat when you don't have time to get out of the city. The bobbing parked runabouts and manicured balconies make you feel right at home.

I stayed at Baur au Lac and I realised that a lovely canal is just outside the hotel. I took the opportunity to stroll along this canal in the afternoon. Boats berthed by the bank, some ducks and trees made up the scenery along the canal.

Usually when people are going from Main Railway Station/City Centre towards Lake Zürich, they are going along River Limmat. This lovely little Canal is almost hidden, but offers you a nice walk between apartment buildings, hotels etc. Grab a coffee and relax for awhile watching swans while you still are only short walk away from many major attractions
